Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-23
All four assets remain Bear and Technical Cheap; yields eased, GLD holdings fell sharply, and silver remains expensive relative to gold.
Gold, silver, GLD and SLV remain below falling 200-day averages, so all four regimes remain Bear. After the October 22 selloff, gold spot and GLD also moved into the Technical Cheap zone. Silver and SLV are weaker versus their own trends, yet the gold/silver ratio remains low in its five-year distribution, leaving silver expensive relative to gold. Nominal and real yields eased at the margin, but real yields remain high and the dollar remains above both major averages: macro is restrictive, easing at the margin.
Cheap/Fair/Hot is a technical position relative to the 200-day average, not a claim about intrinsic value. Spot, futures and ETF prices are kept separate.
1. Current prices and ETF mapping
| Asset | Latest | Timestamp, source and status |
|---|---|---|
| Gold spot | $4,017.60/oz | Kitco bid, 2026-10-22 19:03 New York / Oct 23 07:03 Beijing; Trading Economics $4,019.08 at Oct 23 03:00 UTC; 0.04% cross-check gap |
| Silver spot | $53.886/oz | Kitco bid, 2026-10-22 19:02 New York / Oct 23 07:02 Beijing; Trading Economics $54.029 at Oct 23 03:00 UTC; 0.27% gap |
| GLD | $369.00 | Yahoo Finance completed close, 2026-10-22 |
| SLV | $49.34 | Yahoo Finance completed close, 2026-10-22 |
Observed mappings are GLD ≈ gold spot × 0.09185 and SLV ≈ silver spot × 0.91564. They are scenario estimates affected by timing, expenses, cash, tracking error and premiums/discounts—not arbitrage conversions. FMP quote for GLD/SLV and the commodity endpoint both returned plan-level ACCESS DENIED; equivalent restricted endpoints were not retried, and the affected price fields pivoted to the transparent sources above.

2. Regime, current zone and technical bands
Rule: price and SMA50 below a falling SMA200 is Bear; both above a rising SMA200 is Bull; otherwise Transition. Cheap is below 0.90×SMA200, Fair is 0.90–1.05×, and Hot is above 1.05×. Spot averages use the same-period futures series shifted by the current spot/futures basis and are labeled SPOT_PROXY.
| Asset | Regime / current zone | Cheap below | Fair band | Hot above |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold spot, GC basis-shifted | Bear; Technical Cheap | $4,038.63 | $4,038.63–4,711.74 | $4,711.74 |
| GLD | Bear; Technical Cheap | $372.98 | $372.98–435.14 | $435.14 |
| Silver spot, SI basis-shifted | Bear; Technical Cheap | $63.55 | $63.55–74.14 | $74.14 |
| SLV | Bear; Technical Cheap | $58.56 | $58.56–68.31 | $68.31 |
There is no classification gap today: all four meet the Bear conditions. Technical Cheap inside a Bear regime indicates a large trend deviation, not an automatic buy or reversal signal.
3. Price stage
Gold / GLD
- GC=F closed $4,060.40 on October 22; SMA50 $4,350.12, SMA200 $4,535.17, with a -0.42% 20-session SMA200 slope.
- Futures sit at 9.4% of the 52-week range, 27.3% below the high. RSI14 is 39.3; five-day return -2.6%, 20-day -5.5%.
- GLD closed $369.00; SMA50 $395.15, SMA200 $414.42; 52-week position 5.9%, drawdown 27.6%, RSI14 38.9, five-day -3.6%, 20-day -5.8%.
- Support: spot $3,986 intraday and roughly $3,901 at the 52-week futures low; GLD $368.35 and $360.12. Resistance: spot $4,039, $4,084–4,164 and the $4,304 proxy SMA50; GLD $372.98 and $395.15.
- Stage meaning: gold has fallen from lower Fair into Technical Cheap, but RSI is not at an extreme. Existing core exposure favors hold/risk control; new risk should be staged, with no reversal claim before the Cheap boundary and SMA50 are recovered.
Silver / SLV
- SI=F closed $54.764 on October 22; SMA50 $63.26, SMA200 $71.76, with a -1.11% 20-session SMA200 slope.
- Futures are at 11.8% of their 52-week range and 54.9% below the high. RSI14 is 32.8; five-day return -3.6%, 20-day -13.7%.
- SLV closed $49.34; SMA50 $57.18, SMA200 $65.06; 52-week position 11.2%, drawdown 55.1%, RSI14 31.2, five-day -5.0%, 20-day -14.4%.
- Support: spot $53.35 intraday and $50 psychological; SLV $49.20 and $41.70. Resistance: spot $54.76, $58.12 and the $62.25 proxy SMA50; SLV $50.33 and $57.18.
- Stage meaning: silver is near oversold but has more volatility and a steeper downtrend than gold. Below $58.12 and SMA50, it remains a fragile Bear-stage asset suitable only for controlled satellite risk.
4. Gold/silver ratio and relative value
Using same-session completed GC=F/SI=F closes, the ratio is 74.14 on October 22. Five-year context: 10th percentile 66.48, median 83.89, 90th percentile 90.76; the current reading is near the 18.3rd percentile.
Conclusion: silver is Technical Cheap versus its own SMA200 but remains expensive relative to gold. The ratio rose from the prior day, so the relative overvaluation eased. A move toward roughly 75–80 would bring silver closer to a neutral relative-value zone; Technical Cheap does not equal relative Cheap.
5. Macro environment
- U.S. 10-year TIPS real yield: 2.76% on 2026-10-21 (FRED DFII10), versus 2.77% on Oct 20 and 2.80% on Oct 19.
- Nominal 10-year yield: 5.13% on 2026-10-21 (FRED DGS10); Yahoo ^TNX closed 4.953% on Oct 22, with SMA50 4.977% and SMA200 4.522%.
- DXY proxy DX-Y.NYB: 101.61 completed close on Oct 22, versus SMA50 100.50 and SMA200 99.54, about 1.3% below its 52-week high.
- NFCI: -0.496 for 2026-10-16; a negative reading indicates looser-than-average financial conditions.
Assessment: high real yields and a dollar above both averages remain restrictive for non-yielding metals. The real-yield decline from 2.80%, market 10-year yield below 5%, and negative NFCI provide marginal relief. FRED frequencies and dates are shown separately rather than treated as simultaneous.

6. ETF holdings and flow proxies
- GLD: SPDR's official archive shows 1,057.62 tonnes on Oct 21 → 1,045.64 tonnes on Oct 22, down 11.98 tonnes. Two dated official observations support the direction; this is
HOLDINGS_PROXY, not an exact dollar cash-flow figure. - SLV: the iShares page shows 15,485.69 tonnes and 551.30M shares on both Oct 21 and Oct 22—unchanged. Its Oct 22 official NAV is $50.41.
The GLD decline confirms that gold's selloff lacked ETF-holdings support. SLV holdings did not fall further, but unchanged holdings do not constitute inflow. Holdings changes, cash creations/redemptions and exchange volume are distinct measures.

7. Slow supply-demand fundamentals
The World Gold Council's Q2 2026 report shows about 289 tonnes of central-bank net purchases in Q2 and roughly 345 tonnes in H1. H1 was the lowest first half since 2022, but reserve diversification and continued purchase intent remain strategic support. The Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026 forecasts 639.6Moz of industrial demand, 151.0Moz of photovoltaic demand and a 46.3Moz deficit, the sixth consecutive annual deficit.
Solar remains material, but the survey also forecasts a 19% decline in PV silver demand. Thrifting, copper substitution and lower silver intensity constrain demand elasticity, so installation growth cannot be extrapolated linearly into silver prices. These slow variables support a long-horizon case but do not override the current Bear regime or establish a unique intrinsic value.

8. Spot-to-ETF scenario mapping
| Gold spot | Estimated GLD | Silver spot | Estimated SLV |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3,800 | $349.01 | $48 | $43.95 |
| $4,000 | $367.38 | $50 | $45.78 |
| $4,017.60 | $369.00 | $53.886 | $49.34 |
| $4,200 | $385.75 | $58 | $53.11 |
| $4,500 | $413.31 | $65 | $59.52 |
The table uses today's observed mapping. Actual ETF prices remain sensitive to timing, expenses, cash, tracking error and premiums/discounts.
9. Three horizons
- Tactical, weeks: all four assets are Technical Cheap inside Bear regimes, creating rebound risk and continued downside risk. Gold must first reclaim $4,039; silver must clear $54.76–58.12. Avoid one-shot dip buying before those levels.
- Cyclical, months: gold above the roughly $4,304 spot-proxy SMA50 / GC $4,350 and silver above $62.25 proxy / SI $63.26 would create Bear→Transition candidates. Multiple closes and ETF-holdings confirmation are still required.
- Strategic, year+: central-bank demand and reserve diversification support gold as a core diversifier. Silver's persistent deficit offers upside elasticity, but PV thrifting, substitution, cyclicality and high volatility argue for smaller, controlled satellite exposure.
10. Action map and data health
- Gold spot reclaiming and holding $4,039 permits small staged additions; below $3,986, pause new risk. A move above $4,304–4,350 is needed for stronger trend confirmation.
- GLD support is $368.35 / $360.12. Reclaim $372.98 to leave Technical Cheap and $395.15 for meaningful medium-term repair.
- Silver holding $53.35 and breaking $54.76–58.12 permits only controlled testing; increase risk only above $62.25–63.26. Below $53.35, slow or reduce risk.
- SLV support is $49.20; reclaiming $50.33 is a first step, while $57.18–58.56 is needed for medium-term repair and exit from Technical Cheap.
- If real yields return toward 3%, ^TNX moves back above 5%, and DXY breaks roughly 102.95, tighten precious-metals addition rules further.
Data health: FMP quote and commodity returned explicit ACCESS DENIED and were not retried. Yahoo completed bars run through 2026-10-22; Kitco and Trading Economics provide time-matched true spot; FRED DFII10/DGS10 end Oct 21 and NFCI Oct 16; official GLD/SLV holdings end Oct 22. WGC and Silver Institute are verified slow-moving fundamentals. No futures price is presented as spot, no holdings proxy as exact cash flow, and no technical cheapness as intrinsic-value discount.
