Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-21

Report date (Beijing):

Gold and silver remain in Bear regimes; gold is low Technical Fair while silver is Technical Cheap but still rich versus gold.

Gold, silver, GLD and SLV remain below falling 200-day averages, keeping their regime at Bear. Gold spot and GLD are near the lower edge of Technical Fair; silver spot and SLV remain Technical Cheap. Yet the gold/silver ratio is low in its five-year distribution, so silver is still expensive relative to gold. High real and nominal yields plus a firm dollar keep the macro backdrop restrictive. Cheap/Fair/Hot refers only to technical position versus SMA200, not verifiable intrinsic value.

1. Latest prices and spot-to-ETF mapping

AssetLatest observationTimestamp, source and status
Gold spot$4,116.50/ozKitco, 2026-10-20 23:09 ET; Trading Economics 2026-10-21 cross-check $4,116.81; same Asian session spot
Silver spot$57.40/ozKitco, 2026-10-20 22:53 ET; Trading Economics 2026-10-21 cross-check $57.55; same-session spot
GLD$377.65Yahoo Finance completed 2026-10-20 close; fallback after FMP quote plan-level ACCESS DENIED
SLV$52.12Yahoo Finance completed 2026-10-20 close; same fallback

Observed mapping factors are GLD≈gold spot×0.09174 and SLV≈silver spot×0.90801. Timing, fees, cash items, tracking and premiums or discounts make these scenario estimates rather than arbitrage conversions. FMP commodity values of GCUSD $4,134.80 and SIUSD $57.61 are futures cross-checks only. Yahoo GC=F and SI=F are also futures continuous series used solely for technical context, never presented as spot.

2. Regime, zone and exact technical bands

Rule: price below a falling SMA200 is Bear; price above a rising SMA200 is Bull; mixed cases are Transition. Technical Cheap is at or below 90% of SMA200, Fair is 90%–105%, and Hot is above 105%. Spot averages are current-basis SPOT_PROXY estimates.

AssetRegime / zoneTechnical CheapTechnical FairTechnical Hot
Gold spotBear / low Fair≤$4,066.89$4,066.89–4,744.71>$4,744.71
GLDBear / low Fair≤$373.31$373.31–435.53>$435.53
Silver spotBear / Technical Cheap≤$64.55$64.55–75.30>$75.30
SLVBear / Technical Cheap≤$58.74$58.74–68.53>$68.53

There is no classification gap today: both futures and both ETFs are below falling SMA200s. Regime describes trend direction and location; it neither guarantees linear continuation nor substitutes for valuation.

3. Price stage and buy, hold or reduce-risk meaning

Gold: GC=F closed 2026-10-20 at $4,142.60, versus SMA50 $4,364.08 and SMA200 $4,538.86. Current-basis spot-proxy SMA50 is $4,344.77 and SMA200 $4,518.77. The close is at 14.3% of its 52-week range and 25.8% below its high. RSI14 is 44.9; five-day return -0.8%, 20-day -5.3%. Kitco's session range is $4,105.40–4,156.30. Support is $4,105, $4,066.89 and $4,000; resistance is $4,156, $4,344.77 and $4,518.77. This remains low Bear consolidation: hold core exposure and tranche only near support; do not call a reversal before SMA50 is reclaimed, and slow additions below the Technical Cheap line.

Silver: SI=F closed at $57.706, versus SMA50 $63.63 and SMA200 $71.98. Spot-proxy SMA50 is $63.40 and SMA200 $71.72. The close is at 15.7% of its 52-week range and 52.4% below its high. RSI14 is 41.2; five-day return -2.5%, 20-day -12.5%. Kitco's session range is $56.27–58.71. Support is $56.27 and $55; resistance is $58.71, $60 and $63.40–64.55. The deep drawdown permits a controlled test position, but trend and volatility argue against one-shot sizing; below $55, reduce or slow risk.

GLD closed $377.65, with SMA50 $396.31, SMA200 $414.79, RSI14 46.3 and a 25.9% drawdown. SLV closed $52.12, with SMA50 $57.50, SMA200 $65.27, RSI14 40.1 and a 52.5% drawdown. All returns are calculated locally from consecutive Yahoo closes, not vendor open-to-close change fields.

4. Gold/silver ratio and relative value

The synchronized Kitco spot ratio is about 71.72, with Trading Economics at 71.53. The completed-session Yahoo futures ratio is 71.79 on 2026-10-20. Five-year daily context is 10th percentile 66.34, median 83.92, and 90th percentile 90.79; the current completed-session ratio is near the 16.9th percentile.

A below-median ratio means one ounce of gold buys less silver than usual, so silver remains relatively expensive versus gold. Silver is Technical Cheap versus its own trend but not cheap versus gold. A move back toward 80 would make relative value closer to its historical median.

5. Macro backdrop

  • U.S. 10-year TIPS real yield: 2.80% on 2026-10-19, FRED DFII10, versus 2.74% previously.
  • U.S. nominal 10-year yield: 5.15% on 2026-10-19, FRED DGS10, versus 5.09%; Yahoo ^TNX closed 2026-10-20 at 5.117%.
  • Dollar index: Yahoo DX-Y.NYB closed 2026-10-20 at 101.73, versus SMA50 100.43 and SMA200 99.51, at 83.5% of its 52-week range.
  • NFCI: -0.499 for 2026-10-09. A negative reading means conditions are looser than average, but the weekly series lags.

A rising real yield, nominal yields above 5%, and a dollar above both moving averages remain restrictive for non-yielding metals. Negative NFCI provides partial relief but does not make the overall backdrop supportive.

6. ETF holdings and flow proxies

  • GLD: SPDR's official historical archive shows 1,058.47 tonnes on 2026-10-19 to 1,060.18 tonnes on October 20, up 1.71 tonnes. The live cards still show AWAITING, but the downloadable archive supplies two dated official observations. This is a HOLDINGS_PROXY, not exact dollar inflow.
  • SLV: the official iShares page shows 15,478.67 tonnes and 551.05M shares on 2026-10-19 to 15,505.35 tonnes and 552.00M shares on October 20, up 26.68 tonnes and 0.95M shares.

Both funds show modest physical-share absorption. That can coexist with weak prices: holdings changes are flow proxies and are insufficient by themselves to confirm a trend reversal.

7. Slow supply and demand

World Gold Council reported about 289 tonnes of Q2 2026 central-bank net purchases and roughly 345 tonnes for H1. H1 was the weakest first half since 2022, but reserve diversification remains a strategic support. The World Silver Survey 2026 estimates industrial demand of 639.6Moz, photovoltaic demand of 151.0Moz, and a 46.3Moz market deficit, the sixth consecutive deficit.

Solar remains important, but thrifting, copper substitution and lower silver intensity constrain demand elasticity. These slow variables inform strategic allocation; they do not prove a uniquely measurable intrinsic-value discount today.

8. Spot-to-ETF scenario mapping

Gold spotEstimated GLDSilver spotEstimated SLV
$3,800$348.61$50$45.40
$4,000$366.96$55$49.94
$4,200$385.31$60$54.48
$4,400$403.66$65$59.02
$4,600$422.01$70$63.56

The table uses current observed mapping factors. Actual ETF prices also reflect timing, fees, cash items, tracking differences and premiums or discounts.

9. Three horizons

  • Tactical, weeks: watch gold $4,156 then $4,345, and silver $58.71 then $60. Defense, tranching and smaller sizing dominate before breakouts.
  • Cyclical, months: gold above about $4,519 and silver above about $71.72 are required for Bear-to-Transition candidates, with multi-day ETF holdings confirmation.
  • Strategic, year+: central-bank demand and diversification support gold as a core allocation. Silver's industrial deficit adds upside sensitivity but also substitution, cyclicality and higher volatility, favoring controlled satellite sizing.

10. Action map and data health

  • Gold holding $4,105–4,066.89 permits small tranches; above $4,344.77 improves repair; above $4,518.77 creates a Transition candidate.
  • GLD's Technical Cheap line is $373.31; stronger medium-term repair requires $396.31.
  • Silver holding $56.27–55 and reclaiming $60 permits a controlled test; add risk only above $63.40–64.55; below $55, slow or reduce.
  • SLV needs $57.50 for medium-term repair; $58.74 exits Technical Cheap.
  • If real yields rise toward 3% and DXY breaks its 52-week high near 102.95, tighten precious-metals entry conditions further.

Data health: FMP quote for GLD/SLV returned plan-level ACCESS DENIED, so equivalent restricted endpoints were not retried. FMP commodity worked but is used only as a futures cross-check. Field-level fallbacks are completed Yahoo bars through 2026-10-20, same-session Kitco and Trading Economics spot, FRED yields through October 19 and NFCI through October 9, plus official GLD and SLV holdings through October 20. The Silver Institute PDF returned HTTP 403 in today's web fetch, so supply-demand figures retain the previously verified 2026 report and are labeled slow-moving. Futures are not presented as spot, and price changes are not substituted for fund flows.
