Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-12
Archived original report. Figures and conclusions reflect the original date and have not been refreshed.
Gold and silver crossed first tactical resistance intraday, but trend reversal is unconfirmed; GLD holdings fell while SLV holdings rose.
Bottom line: Gold and silver extended their rebound in Sunday Asian trading and crossed the first tactical resistance levels from the prior report. The active futures session is incomplete, so this is not a confirmed trend reversal. Both metals remain below their 50-day and 200-day averages, while macro conditions remain restrictive. New official holdings data confirm divergence: GLD holdings fell again on October 9 while SLV holdings rose over two days.
Cheap/Fair/Hot is only a technical location versus the 200-day moving average, not a test against a verifiable intrinsic value.
INTRINSIC_VALUE_NOT_ESTIMATED: gold has no stable cash flow and silver combines monetary and industrial roles, so this report does not fabricate one unique intrinsic value.
1. Current prices and spot-to-ETF mapping
| Asset | Latest value | Observation date, source and definition |
|---|---|---|
| Gold spot XAU/USD | $4,213.30/oz | 2026-10-12 02:20 UTC, Gold-API; Trading Economics about $4,212.12 |
| Silver spot XAG/USD | $61.346/oz | 2026-10-12 02:20 UTC, Gold-API; Trading Economics about $61.257 |
| Gold futures GCUSD | $4,234.50 | 2026-10-12 02:10 UTC, FMP; FUTURES, not spot |
| Silver futures SIUSD | $61.455 | 2026-10-12 02:10 UTC, FMP; FUTURES, not spot |
| GLD | $384.58 | 2026-10-09 completed close, FMP and Yahoo agree |
| SLV | $54.78 | 2026-10-09 completed close, FMP and Yahoo agree |
The two spot feeds differ by about 0.03% for gold and 0.15% for silver. Using current spot against Friday's ETF close gives weekend observation factors of GLD ≈ gold ×0.09128 and SLV ≈ silver ×0.89297. These cross-time estimates include weekend moves, fees and tracking effects; they are not arbitrage conversions.
2. Regime, current zone and technical bands
The strict rule labels price and SMA200 moving together above as Bull, together below as Bear, and conflicting directions as Transition. Bands are 90% and 110% of SMA200.
| Asset | Regime and current zone | Technical Cheap | Technical Fair | Technical Hot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold spot / GC reference | Low-confidence Bear; lower Fair | <$4,093.22 | $4,093.22–5,002.82 | >$5,002.82 |
| GLD | Low-confidence Bear; lower Fair | <$374.09 | $374.09–457.22 | >$457.22 |
| Silver spot / SI reference | Transition; technical Cheap | <$65.24 | $65.24–79.74 | >$79.74 |
| SLV | Transition; technical Cheap | <$59.20 | $59.20–72.35 | >$72.35 |
Classification gap: gold and GLD SMA200 fell only about 0.01% and 0.07% over 20 completed sessions. The strict rule says Bear, but the near-flat slope is not an accelerating downtrend, hence low confidence. Silver and SLV trade below a still-rising SMA200 and therefore remain Transition rather than a forced Bull or Bear label.
3. Price stage and momentum
Gold (Yahoo GC=F, through the completed 2026-10-09 bar): close $4,216.30; SMA50 $4,376.97, 3.7% above price; SMA200 $4,548.02, 7.3% above. The close sits at 18.7% of its 52-week intraday range and 24.5% below the 52-week high. RSI14 using simple average gains/losses is 33.0; five-day return +1.3%, 20-day -4.4%. Current FMP futures at $4,234.50 crossed the old $4,208–4,216 resistance but the session is incomplete. Support: $4,216, $4,141 and the $4,093 Cheap threshold. Resistance: the $4,242 session high, SMA50 near $4,377 and the 20-day high near $4,425. Meaning: a stronger weak-trend repair, not a reversal.
Silver (Yahoo SI=F, through the completed 2026-10-09 bar): close $60.67; SMA50 $64.11, 5.4% above; SMA200 $72.49, 16.3% above. The close is at 19.6% of its 52-week intraday range and 50.0% below the high. RSI14 is 31.3; five-day return +1.2%, 20-day -6.0%. Current FMP futures at $61.455 crossed the old $61.30 resistance. Support: $61.30 and $59.06. Resistance: $61.75, $64.11 and $65.24. Meaning: the near-oversold rebound continues, but below $64–65 it is not a medium-term uptrend.
4. Gold/silver ratio and relative value
The spot ratio is 68.68. The five-year Yahoo futures-close distribution has a 10th percentile of 66.24, median 83.92 and 90th percentile 90.80; today's ratio is near the 13.5th percentile. A lower ratio means silver is more expensive relative to gold. Silver is therefore technically Cheap versus its own SMA200 but still relatively expensive versus gold. A move back toward 75–80 would improve silver's relative-value case.
5. Macro environment
- US 10Y TIPS real yield: 2.87% on 2026-10-08, previously 2.92% (FRED
DFII10). - US nominal 10Y: 5.22% on 2026-10-08, previously 5.28% (FRED
DGS10); FMP/Yahoo market reference about 5.24% on October 9. - DXY: about 102.13 in Sunday trading; October 9 completed close 102.21, SMA50 100.11, SMA200 99.37, still near its 52-week high.
- NFCI: -0.494 for 2026-10-02 versus -0.510 prior; conditions remain loose but tightened marginally.
Falling yields help at the margin, but a near-3% real yield, roughly 5.2% nominal 10Y and a strong dollar leave the macro regime restrictive, improving at the margin. Real yields above 3% together with DXY above 102.54 would tighten the constraint again.
6. ETF holdings and flow confirmation
- GLD official fact: 1,055.41 tonnes on October 8 to 1,053.13 tonnes on October 9, down 2.28 tonnes in one day and 7.98 tonnes from October 7. Friday's price rebound lacked GLD holdings confirmation.
- SLV official fact: 15,311.57 tonnes on October 7 to 15,363.53 tonnes on October 9, up 51.96 tonnes over two days. The official history download shows shares rising from 545.10M to 546.95M, up 1.85M; October 8 to 9 alone added 0.80M shares.
These are dated, like-for-like holdings/share observations, not exact cash subscription flows. The signal remains divergent: GLD negative, SLV positive.
7. Slow supply-demand fundamentals and intrinsic-value boundary
- WGC reports about 289 tonnes of Q2 2026 central-bank net buying and 345 tonnes in H1. Its survey found 89% of reserve managers expect global central-bank gold reserves to rise over the next year and 45% expect their own institution to add. Strategic demand is strong, although H1 buying was still the lowest first-half total since 2022.
- The Silver Institute estimates 2026 industrial demand around 639.6Moz and a roughly 46.3Moz market deficit.
- Solar is not a one-way bullish input: unit silver loadings fell more than 15% in 2025 and PV silver demand fell about 6%; the survey expects another 15–20% reduction in unit usage during 2026 from thrifting and copper substitution. AI, grid and automotive demand provide support, but do not guarantee linear industrial-demand growth.
These slow variables support long-horizon allocation analysis; they do not prove that today's price is below one uniquely measurable intrinsic value.
8. Spot-to-ETF scenarios
| Gold spot | Estimated GLD | Silver spot | Estimated SLV |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3,900 | $355.98 | $55 | $49.11 |
| $4,100 | $374.24 | $60 | $53.58 |
| $4,213.30 | $384.58 | $61.346 | $54.78 |
| $4,400 | $401.62 | $65 | $58.04 |
| $4,700 | $429.00 | $75 | $66.97 |
The mapping holds this observation's ratios constant and does not predict ETF gaps, premiums/discounts, fees or FX effects. It is a SCENARIO_ESTIMATE.
9. Three horizons
- Tactical, weeks: momentum improved again from the October 10 report and both metals crossed first intraday resistance, but avoid chasing before completed daily confirmation. SLV has better holdings support than GLD, while silver is not cheap relative to gold.
- Cyclical, months: gold above $4,377 and silver above $64.11 followed by $65.24 would support a shift from repair to uptrend. Both remain below SMA50 and SMA200 today.
- Strategic, a year or longer: gold retains a role as a core diversifier against monetary and geopolitical risk, but high real yields argue for paced entry. Silver offers greater supply-demand convexity along with industrial cyclicality, substitution risk and higher volatility, fitting a controlled satellite role.
10. Action map and data health
- Gold/GC: a completed daily close above $4,242 confirms the first breakout; $4,377 is the stronger medium-term trigger. A loss of $4,216 and then $4,141 slows additions; below $4,093 reduces tactical risk.
- GLD: support $374–379; SMA50 confirmation near $397. Do not call the rebound fund-confirmed while holdings are falling.
- Silver/SI: completed close above $61.75 opens $64.11; below $59.06 invalidates the rebound.
- SLV: support $53.45–53.82; reclaiming $57.94 confirms medium-term repair.
Data health: FMP live commodity endpoints succeeded but returned futures only; futures are not presented as spot. Gold-API and Trading Economics cross-check spot at 2026-10-12 02:20 UTC. FMP and Yahoo agree on October 9 GLD/SLV closes. Technical metrics are computed locally from Yahoo completed daily closes and exclude the active October 12 futures row. FRED yields end October 8 and NFCI October 2; official GLD/SLV holdings end October 9. Weekend ETF closes are the latest completed session and are not STALE_CRITICAL.
