Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-17

Report date (Beijing):

Gold, silver, GLD and SLV remain in Bear regimes; gold sits near the low end of Technical Fair while silver is Technical Cheap, with high real yields still restrictive.

Bottom line: gold, silver, GLD and SLV are below declining 200-day averages, so the regime is Bear. Gold spot is near the bottom of Technical Fair; silver is Technical Cheap. Cheap/Fair/Hot is a trend-relative label, not a claim that price is below a uniquely measurable intrinsic value.

1. Prices and spot-to-ETF mapping

SLV$51.512026-10-16 close, FMPFMP_FALLBACK after both Yahoo hosts returned HTTP 429

FMP futures were GCUSD $4,181.10 and SIUSD $57.305 at 2026-10-16 21:00 UTC; neither is presented as spot. Current mapping factors are GLD≈gold×0.09169 and SLV≈silver×0.90280, scenario estimates rather than frictionless conversion ratios.

2. Regime and exact technical bands

Rule: price below a falling SMA200 is Bear. Technical Cheap is ≤90% of SMA200, Fair is 90%–105%, and Hot is >105%.

AssetRegime / zoneCheapFairHot
Gold spotBear / low Fair≤$4,051.50$4,051.50–4,726.75>$4,726.75
GLDBear / low Fair≤$373.48$373.48–435.73>$435.73
Silver spotBear / Technical Cheap≤$63.132$63.132–73.653>$73.653
SLVBear / Technical Cheap≤$58.86$58.86–68.67>$68.67

Spot averages are SPOT_PROXY values translating continuous futures averages by the current spot/futures basis. Gold has no reliably discountable cash flow, so technical valuation and intrinsic value must remain separate.

3. Price stage

Gold: GCUSD closed at $4,181.10 versus SMA50 $4,375.20 and SMA200 $4,517.71; spot-proxy averages are $4,359.66 and $4,501.66. It sits at 13.8% of its 52-week range, 22.1% below the high. RSI14 is 43.4; five-day return -0.8%, 20-day -5.5%. Support: $4,108, $4,051, $3,992. Resistance: $4,220, $4,360, $4,502. This is low consolidation inside a bear trend; holding a core allocation is more defensible than treating a bounce as reversal before SMA50 is reclaimed.

Silver: SIUSD closed $57.305 versus SMA50 $64.370 and SMA200 $70.452; spot-proxy averages are $64.091 and $70.146. It is at 2.4% of its range and 50.4% below the high. RSI14 is 35.9; five-day return -6.1%, 20-day -14.7%. Support: $55.88 and $55. Resistance: $60, $63.13–64.09 and $70.15. Evidence favors waiting for stabilization; controlled tranches dominate a one-shot position.

GLD closed $382.01, SMA50 $397.18, SMA200 $414.98, RSI14 45.5 and drawdown 23.0%. SLV closed $51.51, SMA50 $57.76, SMA200 $65.40, RSI14 37.2 and drawdown 51.2%.

4. Gold/silver ratio

The spot ratio is 73.02. Five-year reference points are approximately P10 64.0, median 83.2 and P90 90.3, placing the current ratio around the lower quintile. A below-median ratio means silver is relatively expensive versus gold. Thus silver is Technical Cheap versus its own trend but not cheap relative to gold.

5. Macro backdrop

FRED 10-year TIPS real yield was 2.78% on 2026-10-15; nominal 10-year yield was 5.10% on 2026-10-15, cross-checked at 5.09% from FMP on 2026-10-16. NFCI was -0.499 for 2026-10-09, still loose. DXY was 101.79 on 2026-10-16 from Investing.com fallback; the FMP DXY chart endpoint returned explicit ACCESS DENIED, so equivalent restricted endpoints were not retried. High real yields and an upper-range dollar remain restrictive, though their latest easing is marginally supportive.

6. ETF holdings

GLD official history: 1,054.20 tonnes on 2026-10-14 to 1,053.91 on 2026-10-15, down 0.29 tonnes; October 16 is HOLDINGS_UNAVAILABLE. SLV official observations: 15,371.95 tonnes and 547.25M shares on October 14 to 15,478.67 tonnes and 551.05M shares on October 16, up 106.72 tonnes and 3.80M shares over two sessions. These are dated holdings changes, not exact dollar cash flows.

7. Slow supply and demand

WGC reported about 289 tonnes of Q2 2026 central-bank net buying and roughly 345 tonnes in H1, the weakest first half since 2022. The Silver Institute estimates 2026 industrial demand at 639.6Moz, PV demand at 151.0Moz and a market deficit of 46.3Moz. Solar remains important, but thrifting and copper substitution prevent linear extrapolation. These slow variables support strategic demand; they do not establish one observable intrinsic value today.

8. Spot-to-ETF scenarios

Gold spotEstimated GLDSilver spotEstimated SLV
$3,800$348.43$50$45.14
$4,000$366.77$55$49.65
$4,200$385.11$60$54.17
$4,400$403.44$65$58.68
$4,600$421.78$70$63.20

9. Three horizons

  • Tactical, weeks: both metals are below SMA50; monitor gold $4,360 and silver $60 then $63.13. Defense and tranching remain preferable before breakouts.
  • Cyclical, months: gold above $4,502 and silver above $70.15 would be needed for a Bear-to-Transition candidate; ETF holdings need multi-day confirmation.
  • Strategic, year+: central-bank demand and diversification support gold. Silver adds an industrial deficit but also substitution, cycle and volatility risks, arguing for smaller sizing.

10. Conditional action map and data health

Gold holding $4,108–4,051 permits small tranches; a daily close above $4,360 improves the setup and above $4,502 creates a Transition candidate. GLD's Technical Cheap line is $373.48; stronger repair needs $397.18. Silver holding $55.88 and reclaiming $60 permits a test position; risk increases only above $64.09, while a break below $55 calls for slower buying. SLV needs $57.76 for medium-term repair and $58.86 to leave Technical Cheap.

Data health: spot feeds are current to 2026-10-17 03:09 UTC; ETF and futures history ends 2026-10-16. Yahoo query1 and query2 returned HTTP 429 for all six mandatory tickers on the initial attempt and single retry, so technical fields are FMP_FALLBACK. GLD holdings end October 15. Spot, futures and ETF identities are kept separate, and missing observations are not fabricated.
