Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-20

Report date (Beijing):

Gold and silver remain in Bear regimes; gold is low Technical Fair while silver is Technical Cheap but still rich versus gold.

Gold, silver, GLD and SLV all remain below falling 200-day averages, keeping the regime at Bear. Gold spot is near the lower edge of Technical Fair; silver spot and SLV remain Technical Cheap. A high dollar and high real yields keep the macro backdrop restrictive. Cheap/Fair/Hot refers only to technical position versus SMA200, not a verifiable intrinsic value.

1. Latest prices and spot-to-ETF mapping

AssetLatest observationTimestamp, source and status
Gold spot$4,142.80/ozKitco, 2026-10-19 23:06 ET; Trading Economics 2026-10-20 cross-check $4,138.57; same Asian session spot
Silver spot$57.30/ozKitco, 2026-10-19 23:05 ET; Trading Economics 2026-10-20 cross-check $57.35; same-session spot
GLD$379.69Yahoo Finance completed 2026-10-19 close; fallback after FMP quote ACCESS DENIED
SLV$51.54Yahoo Finance completed 2026-10-19 close; same fallback

Observed mapping factors are GLD≈gold spot×0.09165 and SLV≈silver spot×0.89948. Timing, fees, cash items and tracking differences make these scenario estimates rather than arbitrage conversions. Yahoo GC=F and SI=F are futures continuous-close series used only for technical context, not presented as spot.

2. Regime, zone and exact technical bands

Rule: price below a falling SMA200 is Bear; price above a rising SMA200 is Bull; mixed cases are Transition. Technical Cheap is at or below 90% of SMA200, Fair is 90%–105%, and Hot is above 105%. Spot averages are current-basis SPOT_PROXY estimates.

AssetRegime / zoneTechnical CheapTechnical FairTechnical Hot
Gold spotBear / low Fair≤$4,068.82$4,068.82–4,746.96>$4,746.96
GLDBear / low Fair≤$373.41$373.41–435.64>$435.64
Silver spotBear / Technical Cheap≤$65.21$65.21–76.08>$76.08
SLVBear / Technical Cheap≤$58.80$58.80–68.60>$68.60

There is no classification gap today: both futures and both ETFs are below falling SMA200s. The regime describes direction and location; it does not imply a linear continuation.

3. Price stage and buy, hold or reduce-risk meaning

Gold: GC=F closed 2026-10-19 at $4,160.10, versus SMA50 $4,369.62 and SMA200 $4,539.79. Spot-proxy SMA50 is $4,351.45 and SMA200 $4,520.91. The close is at 14.7% of its 52-week range and 21.8% below its 52-week high. RSI14 is 47.7; five-day return -0.7%, 20-day -5.1%. Kitco's session range is about $4,115–4,191. Support is $4,115, $4,069 and $4,000; resistance is $4,191, $4,351 and $4,521. This remains low Bear consolidation: hold core exposure and tranche only near support; do not call a reversal before SMA50 is reclaimed, and slow additions below $4,069.

Silver: SI=F closed at $56.974, versus SMA50 $63.77 and SMA200 $72.04. Spot-proxy SMA50 is $64.14 and SMA200 $72.46. The close is at 15.2% of its 52-week range and 50.5% below its high. RSI14 is 36.2; five-day return -5.3%, 20-day -13.4%. Kitco's session range is about $56.27–57.96. Support is $56.27 and $55; resistance is $57.96, $60 and $64.14–65.21. The drawdown permits a controlled test position, but trend and volatility argue against one-shot sizing; below $55, reduce or slow risk.

GLD closed $379.69, with SMA50 $396.81, SMA200 $414.90, RSI14 46.3 and a 23.4% drawdown. SLV closed $51.54, with SMA50 $57.64, SMA200 $65.34, RSI14 34.2 and a 51.2% drawdown. All returns are calculated locally from consecutive closes, not vendor open-to-close change fields.

4. Gold/silver ratio and relative value

The synchronized Kitco spot ratio is about 72.30, with Trading Economics at 72.16. The synchronized Yahoo futures-close ratio is 73.02 on 2026-10-19. Five-year daily context is 10th percentile 66.24, median 83.92, and 90th percentile 90.80; the current futures ratio is near the 17.3rd percentile.

A below-median ratio means an ounce of gold buys less silver than usual, so silver remains relatively expensive versus gold. Silver is Technical Cheap versus its own trend but not cheap versus gold. A move back toward 80 would improve the relative-value case.

5. Macro backdrop

  • U.S. 10-year TIPS real yield: 2.74% on 2026-10-16, FRED DFII10.
  • U.S. nominal 10-year yield: 5.09% on 2026-10-16, FRED DGS10; Yahoo ^TNX closed 2026-10-19 at 5.136%.
  • Dollar index: Yahoo DX-Y.NYB closed 2026-10-19 at 101.98, versus SMA50 100.39 and SMA200 99.49, at 90.6% of its 52-week range.
  • NFCI: -0.499 for 2026-10-09; conditions remain looser than average, but the weekly observation lags.

High real yields, nominal yields above 5%, and an upper-range dollar remain restrictive for non-yielding metals. The real yield has eased from 2.88% on October 13 and NFCI remains negative, providing partial relief. Overall: restrictive and improving slightly at the margin, but not supportive.

6. ETF holdings and flow proxies

  • GLD: the official SPDR page currently returns AWAITING for key holdings fields. The last verifiable official history remains 1,054.20 tonnes on October 14 to 1,053.91 tonnes on October 15, down 0.29 tonnes. October 16 onward is HOLDINGS_UNAVAILABLE; price change is not substituted for flow.
  • SLV: the official iShares page reports 15,478.67 tonnes and 551.05M shares on 2026-10-19, unchanged from 15,478.67 tonnes and 551.05M shares on 2026-10-16. The change between two dated observations is zero tonnes and zero shares.

These are holdings proxies, not exact dollar subscriptions. GLD's latest daily flow is unavailable; SLV's first post-weekend observation shows stable holdings rather than fresh absorption or outflow.

7. Slow supply and demand

World Gold Council reported about 289 tonnes of Q2 2026 central-bank net purchases and roughly 345 tonnes for H1. It was the weakest first half since 2022, but reserve diversification remains a strategic support. The World Silver Survey 2026 estimates industrial demand of 639.6Moz, photovoltaic demand of 151.0Moz, and a 46.3Moz market deficit, the sixth consecutive deficit.

Solar remains important, but thrifting, copper substitution and lower silver intensity constrain demand elasticity. These are slow variables that inform strategic allocation; they do not prove a uniquely measurable intrinsic-value discount today.

8. Spot-to-ETF scenario mapping

Gold spotEstimated GLDSilver spotEstimated SLV
$3,800$348.27$50$44.97
$4,000$366.60$55$49.47
$4,200$384.93$60$53.97
$4,400$403.26$65$58.47
$4,600$421.59$70$62.96

The table uses current observed mapping factors. Actual ETF prices also reflect timing, fees, cash items and premiums or discounts.

9. Three horizons

  • Tactical, weeks: watch gold $4,191 then $4,351, and silver $57.96 then $60. Defense, tranching and smaller sizing dominate before breakouts.
  • Cyclical, months: gold above $4,521 and silver above $72.46 are required for Bear-to-Transition candidates, with multi-day ETF holdings confirmation.
  • Strategic, year+: central-bank demand and diversification support gold as a core allocation. Silver's industrial deficit adds upside sensitivity but also substitution, cyclicality and higher volatility, favoring smaller satellite sizing.

10. Action map and data health

  • Gold holding $4,115–4,069 permits small tranches; above $4,351 improves repair; above $4,521 creates a Transition candidate.
  • GLD's Technical Cheap line is $373.41; stronger medium-term repair requires $396.81.
  • Silver holding $56.27–55 and reclaiming $60 permits a controlled test; add risk only above $64.14–65.21; below $55, slow or reduce.
  • SLV needs $57.64 for medium-term repair; $58.80 exits Technical Cheap.
  • If real yields rise back toward 3% and DXY breaks its 52-week high near 102.58, tighten precious-metals entry conditions.

Data health: FMP quote explicitly requires Premium/Ultimate/Enterprise and commodity requires Ultimate/Enterprise; both returned plan-level ACCESS DENIED, so equivalent restricted endpoints were not retried. Field-level fallbacks are completed Yahoo bars through 2026-10-19, same-session Kitco and Trading Economics spot, FRED yields through October 16 and NFCI through October 9, and official SLV holdings through October 19. GLD's official live holdings fields return AWAITING; the last verifiable holdings observation is October 15, so newer values are HOLDINGS_UNAVAILABLE. Futures are not presented as spot and GLD daily flow is not fabricated.
