Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-22

Report date (Beijing):

Gold and silver remain in Bear regimes; gold is lower Fair, silver Technical Cheap but still expensive relative to gold, and macro remains restrictive.

Gold, silver, GLD and SLV remain below falling 200-day averages, keeping the regime at Bear. Gold spot and GLD sit near the lower edge of Technical Fair; silver spot and SLV are Technical Cheap, but the low gold/silver ratio says silver is still expensive relative to gold. High real yields, nominal yields above 5% and a firm dollar keep the macro backdrop restrictive.

Cheap/Fair/Hot describes technical position versus SMA200, not a verifiable intrinsic-value discount. Spot, futures and ETF prices are kept separate.

1. Prices and ETF mapping

AssetLatestTimestamp, source and status
Gold spot$4,110.10/ozKitco, 2026-10-21 23:07 New York; Trading Economics on Oct 22 $4,116.78, 0.16% cross-check gap
Silver spot$56.53/ozKitco, 2026-10-21 22:47 New York; Trading Economics on Oct 22 $56.731, 0.36% cross-check gap
GLD$378.95Yahoo Finance, completed 2026-10-21 close
SLV$52.26Yahoo Finance, completed 2026-10-21 close

The observed, non-synchronous mapping is GLD ≈ gold spot × 0.09220 and SLV ≈ silver spot × 0.92446. These are scenario estimates subject to timing, fees, tracking error and premium/discount. FMP's GLD/SLV live quote endpoint returned plan-level ACCESS DENIED; equivalent restricted endpoints were not retried. FMP GCUSD/SIUSD futures cross-checks were $4,132.50/$56.835 at 2026-10-22 10:59 Beijing and are not presented as spot.

2. Regime, zone and technical bands

Rule: price and SMA50 below a falling SMA200 is Bear; both above a rising SMA200 is Bull; otherwise Transition. Cheap is below 0.90×SMA200 and Hot above 1.05×SMA200. Spot averages use the same-period futures series translated by the current spot/futures basis and are labeled SPOT_PROXY.

AssetRegime / current zoneCheapFairHot
Gold spot, GC basis proxyBear; lower Technical Fair<$4,044.35$4,044.35–4,718.41>$4,718.41
GLDBear; lower Technical Fair<$373.18$373.18–435.38>$435.38
Silver spot, SI basis proxyBear; Technical Cheap<$63.69$63.69–74.31>$74.31
SLVBear; Technical Cheap<$58.67$58.67–68.44>$68.44

The framework gap is explicit: Gold's Fair and silver's Cheap are zones inside Bear, not evidence of trend reversal or intrinsic value.

3. Price stage

Gold / GLD

  • GC=F closed 2026-10-21 at $4,150.00; SMA50 $4,358.26, SMA200 $4,537.35, with a 20-session SMA200 slope of -0.39%.
  • Gold futures sit at 14.8% of their 52-week range, 25.7% below the high; RSI(14) 43.9, five-day +1.0%, 20-day -3.9%.
  • GLD closed $378.95; SMA50 $395.87 and SMA200 $414.64; range position 12.6%, drawdown 25.7%, RSI(14) 45.5.
  • Support: spot $4,105–4,044; GC $4,120/$4,091; GLD $376.20/$373.18. Resistance: GC $4,221/$4,358; GLD $384.88/$395.87.
  • Meaning: Momentum has repaired from oversold levels, but prices remain below falling averages. Hold and risk control take priority for core exposure; add risk in tranches and do not call a reversal before the 50-day average is reclaimed.

Silver / SLV

  • SI=F closed 2026-10-21 at $57.422; SMA50 $63.48, SMA200 $71.89, with a 20-session SMA200 slope of -0.98%.
  • Silver futures sit at 15.3% of their 52-week range, 52.7% below the high; RSI(14) 37.5, five-day +3.4%, 20-day -10.8%.
  • SLV closed $52.26; SMA50 $57.37 and SMA200 $65.18; range position 15.5%, drawdown 52.4%, RSI(14) 38.2.
  • Support: spot $56.5/$55; SI $56.74/$55.50; SLV $51.40/$50.01. Resistance: silver $58.10/$60/$63.48; SLV $52.89/$57.37.
  • Meaning: Silver is technically cheaper, but trend, 20-day momentum and ETF holdings do not confirm a reversal. Treat it as smaller, controlled satellite risk; below $55, reduce the pace of additions.

4. Gold/silver ratio

Using synchronized completed GC=F/SI=F closes, the ratio was 72.27 on 2026-10-21. Five-year references: 10th percentile 66.34, median 83.92, 90th percentile 90.79; the current reading is near the 17.0th percentile.

Silver is Technical Cheap versus its own SMA200 but remains expensive relative to gold. A ratio nearer 75–80 would improve silver's relative-value case. Technical cheapness and relative cheapness are different claims.

5. Macro

  • U.S. 10-year TIPS real yield: 2.80% on 2026-10-19, FRED DFII10, latest previously verified observation; prior 2.74%.
  • U.S. nominal 10-year yield: 5.15% on 2026-10-19, FRED DGS10, latest previously verified observation. Yahoo ^TNX closed 2026-10-21 at 5.146%, with SMA50 4.971% and SMA200 4.518%.
  • DXY proxy DX-Y.NYB closed 2026-10-21 at 101.78, above SMA50 100.47 and SMA200 99.52 and about 1.1% below its 52-week high.
  • NFCI: -0.499 for 2026-10-09, latest previously verified weekly observation; a negative reading means conditions are looser than historical average.

The backdrop remains restrictive: real yields are high, nominal yields exceed 5%, and the dollar is above both averages. Negative NFCI offers partial relief. FRED's pages and public CSV were under maintenance in this run, so no Oct 20–21 observation was obtained; macro source status is DATA_INCOMPLETE, not falsely refreshed.

6. ETF holdings and flow proxies

  • GLD: SPDR's official archive shows 1,060.18 tonnes on 2026-10-20 to 1,057.62 tonnes on Oct 21, down 2.56 tonnes. The live card remains AWAITING, but the archive provides two dated official observations. This is HOLDINGS_PROXY, not exact dollar net outflow.
  • SLV: iShares shows 15,505.35 tonnes and 552.00M shares on 2026-10-20 to 15,485.69 tonnes and 551.30M shares on Oct 21, down 19.66 tonnes and 0.70M shares.

Both funds showed lower holdings, offering no fund-flow confirmation for the weak price trend. Holdings changes are not the same as cash subscriptions/redemptions and cannot prove trend continuation alone.

7. Slow supply and demand

World Gold Council's Q2 2026 report put central-bank net buying at about 289 tonnes and first-half demand at about 345 tonnes. H1 was the lowest first half since 2022, but reserve diversification and stated buying intent remain strategic support. Previously verified World Silver Survey 2026 figures estimate industrial demand at 639.6Moz, photovoltaic demand at 151.0Moz, and a 46.3Moz market deficit, the sixth consecutive annual deficit.

Solar remains important, but thrifting, copper substitution and falling silver intensity constrain linear extrapolation from installations to prices. The Silver Institute PDF returned HTTP 403 in this run, so those figures are labeled previously verified 2026 slow variables, not fresh Oct 22 data.

8. Spot-to-ETF scenarios

Gold spotEstimated GLDSilver spotEstimated SLV
$3,800$350.36$50$46.22
$4,000$368.80$55$50.85
$4,110.10$378.95$56.53$52.26
$4,300$396.46$60$55.47
$4,500$414.90$65$60.09

These use the current observed mapping. Actual ETF prices also depend on trading time, expenses, cash items, tracking error and premium/discount.

9. Three horizons

  • Tactical, weeks: Watch gold support at $4,044 and resistance at $4,221; silver support at $55 and resistance at $58.10–60. Both remain repairs inside Bear, so avoid chasing a single-day rebound.
  • Cyclical, months: Gold reclaiming the translated spot SMA50 near $4,316 / GC $4,358 and silver reclaiming about $62.49 / SI $63.48 would qualify for Bear-to-Transition candidacy; require sustained closes and ETF holdings confirmation.
  • Strategic, year+: Central-bank demand and diversification still support gold as core exposure. Silver's industrial deficit adds upside elasticity but also substitution, cycle and volatility risk, favoring controlled satellite exposure.

10. Action map and data health

  • Gold holding $4,105–4,044 permits planned small tranches; below $4,044, pause added risk; daily closes above $4,316–4,358 strengthen trend confirmation.
  • GLD support is $376.20–373.18; a move above $395.87 is needed for stronger medium-term repair.
  • Silver holding $55 and breaking $58.10–60 permits a controlled probe; raise risk only above $62.49–63.48; below $55, slow or reduce.
  • SLV support is $51.40–50.01; reclaim $57.37 for medium-term repair; $58.67 exits Technical Cheap.
  • If real yields rise toward 3%, ^TNX stays above 5%, and DXY breaks about 102.95, tighten precious-metals entry conditions further.

Data health: FMP quote for GLD/SLV returned ACCESS DENIED and was not retried; FMP commodity is only a futures cross-check. Yahoo completed bars run through 2026-10-21; Kitco and Trading Economics provide time-matched spot; official GLD/SLV holdings run through Oct 21. FRED pages and CSV were under maintenance, so DFII10/DGS10 retain Oct 19 and NFCI Oct 9 as the latest previously verified observations, marked DATA_INCOMPLETE. The Silver Institute PDF returned 403, so silver fundamentals remain previously verified slow variables. Futures are not presented as spot, price moves are not presented as fund flows, and technical cheapness is not presented as intrinsic value.
