Gold & silver daily report · 2026-10-18

Report date (Beijing):

Gold and silver remain in Bear regimes; gold is low Technical Fair while silver is Technical Cheap but relatively expensive versus gold.

Bottom line: gold, silver, GLD and SLV are below declining 200-day averages, so the current regime is Bear. Gold spot is near the bottom of Technical Fair; silver spot and SLV are Technical Cheap. Markets are closed for the weekend, so spot uses the latest available two-source observation. Cheap/Fair/Hot is trend-relative, not an intrinsic-value claim.

1. Current prices and spot-to-ETF mapping

AssetLatest priceObservation, source and status
Gold spot$4,164.10/ozKitco at 2026-10-18 03:10 UTC; Trading Economics October 16 $4,166.39 cross-check; weekend last quote
Silver spot$56.87/ozKitco at 2026-10-18 03:10 UTC; Trading Economics October 16 $56.99 cross-check; weekend last quote
GLD$382.01Yahoo Finance, October 16 completed close; fallback after FMP quote ACCESS DENIED
SLV$51.51Yahoo Finance, October 16 completed close; same fallback

Observed mapping factors are GLD≈gold×0.09174 and SLV≈silver×0.90575. Timing, fees and tracking differences make these scenario tools, not arbitrage ratios. Yahoo GC=F and SI=F continuous futures are used only for technical history and are not presented as spot.

2. Regime, zone and exact bands

Rule: price below a falling SMA200 is Bear; price above a rising SMA200 is Bull; other combinations are Transition. Technical Cheap is ≤90% of SMA200, Fair is 90%–105%, and Hot is >105%. Spot averages are SPOT_PROXY values translated by the current spot/futures basis.

AssetRegime / zoneTechnical CheapTechnical FairTechnical Hot
Gold spotBear / low Fair≤$4,070.01$4,070.01–4,748.35>$4,748.35
GLDBear / low Fair≤$373.48$373.48–435.73>$435.73
Silver spotBear / Technical Cheap≤$64.76$64.76–75.55>$75.55
SLVBear / Technical Cheap≤$58.86$58.86–68.67>$68.67

There is no classification gap today: both futures and both ETFs are below declining SMA200s. Bear describes direction and position, not a forecast of linear losses.

3. Price stage and buy/hold/risk meaning

Gold: GC=F closed October 16 at $4,181.10, with SMA50 $4,374.41 and SMA200 $4,540.70; spot-proxy averages are $4,356.63 and $4,522.24. It is at 16.2% of its 52-week range and 21.4% below the high. RSI14 is 43.5; five-day return -0.8%, 20-day -5.5%. Support is $4,091–4,070 then $4,000; resistance is $4,220, $4,357 and $4,522. Core holdings can be maintained and support can permit small tranches, but a bounce is not a reversal before SMA50 is reclaimed. Below $4,070, slow buying.

Silver: SI=F closed $56.995, with SMA50 $63.90 and SMA200 $72.11; spot-proxy averages are $63.76 and $71.95. Its 52-week position is 15.2%, with a 50.5% drawdown. RSI14 is 36.2; five-day return -6.1%, 20-day -14.4%. Support is $55.50 and $55; resistance is $60, $63.76–64.76 and $71.95. Technical Cheap permits controlled tests, not a one-shot large position; below $55, reduce risk.

GLD closed $382.01, SMA50 $397.18, SMA200 $414.98, RSI14 45.5 and drawdown 23.0%. SLV closed $51.51, SMA50 $57.76, SMA200 $65.40, RSI14 37.2 and drawdown 51.2%. Returns are computed locally from continuous closes, not vendor open-to-close changePercent.

4. Gold/silver ratio and relative value

The two-feed spot ratio is about 73.22; synchronized Yahoo GC=F/SI=F closes give 73.36 on October 16. Five-year synchronized history has P10 66.34, median 83.92 and P90 90.79, placing the latest reading near the 17.5th percentile.

A below-median ratio means each ounce of gold buys less silver than usual, so silver remains relatively expensive versus gold. Silver is Technical Cheap versus its own trend but not cheap versus gold. A move back toward 80 would improve the relative-value case.

5. Macro backdrop

  • U.S. 10-year TIPS real yield: 2.78% on 2026-10-15, FRED DFII10.
  • U.S. nominal 10-year yield: 5.10% on 2026-10-15, FRED DGS10; Yahoo ^TNX closed October 16 at 5.098%.
  • Dollar index: Yahoo DX-Y.NYB closed October 16 at 101.84, versus SMA50 100.35 and SMA200 99.47, at 88.4% of its 52-week range.
  • NFCI: -0.499 for 2026-10-09; conditions remain looser than average but have tightened gradually.

High real yields, 5% nominal yields and an upper-range dollar remain restrictive for non-yielding metals. Yield easing from recent highs and a still-negative NFCI offer partial relief. The combined backdrop is restrictive, improving slightly at the margin.

6. ETF holdings and flow proxies

  • GLD official history: 1,054.20 tonnes on October 14 to 1,053.91 tonnes on October 15, down 0.29 tonnes. October 16 is HOLDINGS_UNAVAILABLE.
  • SLV official observations: 15,371.95 tonnes and 547.25M shares on October 14 to 15,478.67 tonnes and 551.05M shares on October 16, up 106.72 tonnes and 3.80M shares.

These are changes between two dated official observations, not exact dollar subscriptions. GLD's latest verifiable change is slightly negative, while SLV shows absorption during price weakness.

7. Slow supply and demand

WGC reported about 289 tonnes of Q2 2026 central-bank net purchases and roughly 345 tonnes for H1, the weakest first half since 2022 but still a strategic diversification support. The World Silver Survey 2026 estimates industrial demand of 639.6Moz, photovoltaic demand of 151.0Moz, and a 46.3Moz market deficit, the sixth consecutive deficit.

Solar remains important, but thrifting, copper substitution and lower silver intensity constrain linear extrapolation. These slow variables inform strategic allocation; they do not prove a uniquely measurable intrinsic-value discount today.

8. Spot-to-ETF scenarios

Gold spotEstimated GLDSilver spotEstimated SLV
$3,800$348.61$50$45.29
$4,000$366.96$55$49.82
$4,200$385.30$60$54.34
$4,400$403.65$65$58.87
$4,600$422.00$70$63.40

The table uses current observed factors; actual ETF prices also reflect timing, fees, cash items and premiums or discounts.

9. Three horizons

  • Tactical, weeks: watch gold $4,220 then $4,357, and silver $60 then $63.76. Defense, tranching and smaller sizing dominate before breakouts.
  • Cyclical, months: gold above $4,522 and silver above $71.95 are required for Bear-to-Transition candidates, with multi-day ETF holdings confirmation.
  • Strategic, year+: central-bank demand and diversification support gold as a core allocation. Silver's industrial deficit adds upside sensitivity but also substitution, cyclicality and higher volatility, favoring satellite sizing.

10. Action map and data health

  • Gold holding $4,091–4,070 permits small tranches; above $4,357 improves repair; above $4,522 creates a Transition candidate.
  • GLD's Technical Cheap line is $373.48; medium-term repair requires $397.18.
  • Silver holding $55 and reclaiming $60 permits a controlled test; add risk only above $63.76–64.76; below $55, slow or reduce.
  • SLV needs $57.76 for medium-term repair; $58.86 exits Technical Cheap.
  • If real yields rise back toward 3% and DXY breaks the recent high near 102.95, tighten entry conditions.

Data health: FMP quote requires Premium/Ultimate/Enterprise and commodity requires Ultimate/Enterprise; both returned explicit ACCESS DENIED, so equivalent endpoints were not retried. Field-level fallbacks are Yahoo daily bars through October 16, Kitco/Trading Economics weekend-last spot, FRED yields through October 15 and NFCI through October 9, GLD holdings through October 15 and SLV through October 16. Futures are not presented as spot, and missing October 16 GLD holdings are not fabricated as a flow.
