Gartner Predicts Over 80% of Neoclouds Will Cease Independent Operations by 2030, Exposing NVIDIA to $36B in Compute Buyback and Guarantee Risks

Research indicates a potential shakeout in the AI cloud sector, leaving NVIDIA exposed to significant financial risks due to deep investment ties and guarantee commitments.

As AI compute demand expands, emerging AI cloud providers (Neoclouds) face severe financial and construction pressures. Research firm Gartner predicted in an October report that over 80% of Neoclouds will cease independent operations by 2030, likely being acquired, merged, or exiting the market. This forecast is based on global AI-optimized Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) spending expected to grow from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030, yet high equipment depreciation and financing costs make it difficult for many vendors to recoup investments.

NVIDIA, as a core supporter of this ecosystem, has risk exposure far beyond simple GPU orders. According to NVIDIA's quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), its future service procurement commitments to AI cloud partners reached $36 billion as of late July this year. Additionally, NVIDIA provides guarantees related to land, power, and building facilities for some partners' data center lease obligations, with maximum total exposure reaching $3.5 billion. This means if clients cannot rent out compute capacity, NVIDIA must purchase remaining services per contract, directly bearing financial losses.

Take CoreWeave, an NVIDIA-backed company, as an example. It currently carries approximately $50 billion in debt, with analysts estimating a $2.13 billion loss this year and bond yields spiking to around 16%. Although NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated that CoreWeave's financial situation is improving, and the two parties have signed a $6.3 billion initial value compute buyback agreement, markets worry that rising financing costs could force heavily leveraged Neoclouds to slow down construction.

Beyond financial risks, infrastructure bottlenecks exacerbate uncertainty. The Financial Times reported that Microsoft exited a data center lease agreement with Nscale, a UK company backed by NVIDIA, due to grid connection delays, impacting plans to deploy 23,000 NVIDIA chips. This demonstrates that even with NVIDIA's funding support, actual progress in power supply and data center construction remains a key variable constraining GPU sales. For investors, the shakeout in the Neocloud industry not only implies the elimination of startups but may also transmit through NVIDIA's balance sheet to the entire AI hardware sector.

How it got here

What is still unsettled
