Gartner: $7T AI Infra Spend to Yield Only About Half Returns by 2030; Over 80% of Emerging Cloud Providers May Exit

Research and advisory firm Gartner announced on October 14, 2026, that global artificial intelligence infrastructure investment is projected to reach $7 trillion between 2026 and 2030, yet these investments are expected to generate at most $3.6 trillion in revenue by 2030.

Will Sommer, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, stated that considering financing costs and a required 12% return on investment, the revenue needed to offset the $7 trillion investment would be $8.5 trillion, creating a gap of approximately $5 trillion against current revenue forecasts. The firm believes sustained AI infrastructure investment may not achieve the 12% ROI target until 2032, with possibly over $4 trillion in assets facing impairment risk before then.

Additionally, Gartner predicts that more than 80% of Neoclouds (emerging AI cloud service providers) will stop operating independently by 2030. This is because they cannot recover their high infrastructure investments within chip iteration cycles amid limited growth in industry spending.
