Arda, an AI manufacturing startup founded by former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew, has announced a $230 million funding round at a $1.5 billion valuation. The round was led by Altimeter Capital, Accel, and Khosla Ventures.
Arda develops software and AI agents to automate assembly line programming. McGrew stated that the core goal is to address the pain point of "excessive time required for automation reconfiguration when designs change" in manufacturing. He noted that while retraining human workers takes about a day after a design change, adjusting automated production lines typically takes three to six months. Arda's product aims to allow manufacturing engineers to build and adjust assembly lines quickly using AI, similar to how programmers use Cursor or Claude.
The company has already deployed its models with defense technology firm Anduril. McGrew emphasized that currently, only East Asia can meet frequent product iteration needs by relying on a large workforce capable of quick retraining; Arda's technology aims to make flexible manufacturing possible within the United States, thereby supporting manufacturing onshoring efforts.
