According to Semafor, the White House’s AI task force formally adopted its charter following its first official meeting on Thursday, launching a 120-day window to address complex questions about how the U.S. government should manage the rapid development of AI technology. The task force is chaired by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton.

The group agreed to commission a report from the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology to evaluate AI risks in three key areas: cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection, biosecurity and dual-use applications, and model control and accountability. Additionally, the task force established a working group to implement the Accord on Super Intelligence, which was signed by major AI CEOs earlier this month.

On the execution side, Defense Undersecretary Emil Michael will lead efforts to develop protocols for labs to report breaches, hacks, and other cyber issues to the government, as well as coordinate with frontier AI labs. FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson will head a new “law enforcement and consumer protection coordination committee” involving the Justice Department and the FTC. Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor will collaborate with public and private sectors on critical infrastructure protection and study AI’s impact on the American workforce.

Enforcement mechanisms for the task force remain unclear. A White House official told Semafor that one potential tool could be imposing export controls. Previously, the Pentagon temporarily imposed export restrictions on Anthropic after the company refused to grant the government unfettered access to its models, suggesting that administrative pressure via national security tools may serve as leverage despite the lack of explicit statutory penalties.

How it got here

What is still unsettled
