Tesla CEO Musk Announces End of Cybertruck Production in Mid-2027 to Prioritize Robotaxi and Robotics
Musk stated that Tesla will stop producing the Cybertruck around mid-next year to free up factory space for the Cybercab self-driving taxi and Optimus robots.
Elon Musk, CEO of U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla, announced on November 6, 2026, that the company plans to wind down production of the Cybertruck electric pickup at its Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year. The decision aims to reallocate factory capacity to the production of its self-driving taxi, the Cybercab, and its humanoid robot, Optimus.
Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns: "Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production." This marks the end of a failed effort to capture a share of the lucrative US pickup market. Since deliveries began in late 2023, the Cybertruck faced significant production challenges and never approached the target of 200,000 annual sales. In the third quarter of 2026, Tesla delivered only 8,300 "other models" (including the Cybertruck), far below the combined 478,000 deliveries of the Model 3 and Model Y.
The discontinuation reflects a complete shift in Tesla's strategic focus. Musk has pinned hopes for Tesla on robotics, artificial intelligence, and an autonomous driving fleet, rather than following the traditional carmakers' approach of developing a steady stream of new models for private buyers. Beyond the Cybercab, the Texas factory will also be used to build Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot. Currently, the Cybercab offers paid trips in limited parts of Austin, Texas, but widespread rollout faces regulatory scrutiny and technical hurdles.
For investors, this move signifies Tesla's acceleration from traditional car sales toward AI-driven mobility and robotics. While ending Cybertruck production may impact short-term revenue, concentrating resources on sectors viewed as future growth engines could reshape market expectations for Tesla's long-term valuation.
