South Korean Fintech KakaoPay Doubles Q3 Operating Profit on Financial Subsidiary Growth
KakaoPay reported a 105% year-over-year surge in Q3 operating profit, driven by strong performance in offline payments, insurance, and securities.
South Korean fintech giant KakaoPay released its third-quarter earnings report on November 3, highlighting a significant boost in profitability. The company recorded consolidated revenue of 302.1 billion KRW, up 27% year-over-year, while operating profit surged 105% to 32.5 billion KRW, effectively doubling compared to the same period last year. Net income rose 72% to 32.9 billion KRW. These results indicate that KakaoPay has successfully improved operational efficiency and margins alongside its revenue expansion.
Growth was driven by synergies across multiple business segments. Offline payment transaction volume increased by 44% year-over-year, contributing to a 19% rise in overall payment service revenue to 154.7 billion KRW. Financial service revenue grew even faster, jumping 41% to 133.4 billion KRW, with insurance revenue surging 80% to a quarterly record. Subsidiaries performed exceptionally well: KakaoPay Insurance saw a 93% increase in revenue, while KakaoPay Securities generated 74.6 billion KRW in revenue, accompanied by substantial gains in stock trading volume and customer assets.
User engagement metrics also hit new highs, with Daily Active Users (DAU) surpassing 7 million for the first time, and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) growing by 23%. Although advertising revenue dipped slightly due to seasonal factors and user experience optimizations, the robust performance of core payment and financial businesses offset this decline. Additionally, the company is advancing its AI asset management service 'AI Coach' and building a digital asset ecosystem through partnerships with global firms like Circle and Fireblocks to explore new growth avenues.
