Samsung Initiates Follow-up Equipment Investment at Taylor Fab 1, Targeting 20k Wafers/Month 2nm Capacity by H2 2027

Samsung has begun ordering additional equipment for its Taylor, Texas fab to fill idle space. The company aims to reach a monthly 2nm production capacity of 20,000 wafers by the second half of 2027, completing its first US advanced-node mass production line.

According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung Electronics has initiated follow-up equipment investments for its first wafer fab in Taylor, Texas. This move aims to utilize existing idle space within the facility to complete core production equipment deployment. With the introduction of new tools, Samsung plans to increase its 2-nanometer (nm) process monthly capacity to the design limit of 20,000 wafers by the second half of 2027.

Industry sources indicate that Samsung recently ordered equipment capable of supporting a monthly capacity of 6,000 wafers, destined for the Taylor fab. Prior to this, Samsung had been executing equipment investments for approximately 10,000 wafers per month since late 2025. Combined with the pilot line capacity established initially, this additional investment will bring the Taylor fab to a total target of 20,000 wafers per month in the second half of 2027. This marks the concluding phase of key infrastructure construction for what is Samsung's first advanced-node mass production line in the United States.

The Taylor fab was decided upon as an investment site in 2021 for cutting-edge foundry production, with an initial investment scale of $17 billion (approx. 23.7 trillion KRW). Major customers include Tesla and other tech giants. As performance requirements for AI chips grow exponentially, the 2nm process has emerged as a core element determining the future landscape of the foundry industry. Currently, only a few companies, including Samsung, TSMC, and Intel, possess mass production capabilities at this node.

Following the completion of Taylor Fab 1, Samsung's next investment focus will be Taylor Fab 2. The company plans to break ground on Fab 2 by the end of 2026, targeting operations by 2030. To facilitate this, Samsung has requested several semiconductor equipment suppliers to obtain stability certifications early, aiming to accelerate the deployment of subsequent production lines.
