According to a report by Semafor, a new poll conducted by Tony Fabrizio (a Trump-aligned pollster) and John Anzalone (a Biden-aligned pollster) reveals significant conditional support among the American public for artificial intelligence data centers. The research was commissioned by the American Infrastructure Alliance, a coalition of AI companies, private equity firms, and labor unions advocating for "responsible" data center development.

The survey found that 58% of respondents nationwide oppose building data centers in their state. However, this opposition shifts dramatically under specific conditions: 54% said they would support construction if companies pledged to cover electricity costs, protect consumers from higher utility bills, and safeguard surrounding environmental resources. Only 31% remained outright opposed even with these guarantees.

Furthermore, seven in ten voters expressed concern that outright moratoriums on AI data centers could lead to China gaining more control over infrastructure housing US information. Meanwhile, 64% worried that bans would result in jobs, investment, and economic growth moving to other states. These findings suggest that clear commitments on cost allocation and environmental protection may help the AI industry mitigate growing legislative resistance at the state level.

How it got here

What is still unsettled

  • Food & Water Watch
