Password Manager 1Password Launches Tool for AI Agents to Log In Without Seeing User Credentials
1Password releases a new platform allowing AI agents to log into user accounts with explicit confirmation, while keeping actual passwords hidden from the agents.
Password management company 1Password launched "1Password for Agents" on October 22, 2026. The new platform aims to address growing consumer concerns about the access granted to AI agents, allowing users to authorize AI proxies to log into their personal accounts on their behalf while ensuring the agents never see the actual credentials.
According to TechCrunch, the platform works by creating a communication system between the agent, the user, and the password manager. When an AI agent attempts to log in on a user's behalf, a unique digital key is sent to 1Password to confirm the agent's identity. The user then receives an alert about the login attempt and can personally confirm the request. Once confirmed, 1Password fills in the credentials for the agent and completes the sign-in, allowing the agent to perform the task without ever accessing the password itself.
1Password stated that users can choose their preferred compatible AI agent, including Anthropic's Claude Duet, OpenAI's Dots or ChatGPT Work, xAI's Grok Bot, Meta's Muse, and agents from startup Town. The company said it is working with other firms to expand the service.
The launch coincides with reports that major U.S. banks have begun detecting agentic activity inside user accounts. Axios reported that bankers described the situation as "horrifying," noting that most banks cannot distinguish whether agentic activity is tied to user requests. A Chase spokesperson previously advised customers not to give their usernames and passwords to anyone. 1Password's new tool attempts to maintain user control over sensitive information while enabling automated convenience.
