Panchovix Releases No-Flash VBIOS Tool for NVIDIA GPUs

A new tool allows users to modify NVIDIA RTX GPU VBIOS parameters (such as power limits) via a Windows registry override mechanism without physically flashing the firmware, significantly reducing operational risks while requiring attention to driver compatibility and electrical safety limits.

Independent developer Panchovix released a VBIOS configuration tool on GitHub on October 20, 2026, targeting NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 to RTX 50 series graphics cards. VBIOS (Video BIOS) is the firmware on a graphics card containing low-level configurations related to hardware operation. Traditionally, breaking through manufacturer-set power, voltage, or current walls required modifying the VBIOS image and using tools like nvflash to write it into the physical flash chip of the graphics card. This process carries high risk; if the flash fails or the image is incompatible, the graphics card may become unbootable (commonly known as "bricked").

Panchovix's tool takes a completely different approach: instead of writing the modified firmware image to physical flash memory, it writes it to the Windows registry key corresponding to the graphics driver. When the NVIDIA driver detects these override configurations, it attempts to load the image and quickly restarts the graphics card to apply the settings, without needing to reboot the entire operating system. Since this process does not involve writing to the physical chip, it avoids the risks associated with traditional flashing failures. The project provides both graphical interface and command-line tools, supports verifying whether the currently running VBIOS matches the loaded image, and allows users to remove override configurations to restore the original firmware.

According to reports by TechPowerUp and Wccftech, the modifications demonstrated by the developer are quite aggressive, such as changing the power limit of the RTX 5090 from 600W to 800W, and the RTX 4090 from 550W to 671W. It must be emphasized that these numbers are merely configuration caps, not actual runtime data; whether the graphics card truly reaches this performance depends on cooling, power supply, and load conditions. Furthermore, not flashing physical memory does not mean there are no risks. The developer warns that if modified parameters exceed the hardware design limits of the graphics card, it may still damage power delivery and other electrical components.

The tool currently requires Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit systems, and NVIDIA 616.x or 617.x series drivers (minimum version 616.56). Future driver updates may change or remove the relevant mechanisms, causing the tool to fail. The developer has completed testing on RTX 5070, RTX 4090, and some RTX 30 series hardware, but not all models have been verified. A Linux version is also available. Users should still retain their original VBIOS images and carefully test modified settings.
