Developer matthew-mcateer has released Survival LLM on GitHub, an open-source AI assistant designed to run entirely on local computers to provide offline guidance during emergencies such as power outages or natural disasters. The project integrates approximately 1.5 million articles from Wikipedia, WikiMed, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Users can query instructions on purifying water or treating burns without internet access, with every answer citing the specific source passage.

The project's README publishes internal benchmark data evaluating large language models like Nemotron 3.5 Super and Qwen3.8 across 22 blackout and first-aid scenarios. Independent AI judges graded responses blind against official guidelines from the USDA, WHO, and others. Results showed Nemotron 3.5 Super achieved 86% accuracy with zero harmful answers. However, the developer explicitly notes these tests were conducted on an earlier library version before Wikipedia content was added, meaning the data serves as a model comparison rather than a guarantee for the currently downloadable version.
