Nvidia Unveils DSX POD Modular AI Data Center, Claims Deployment Cut to 14 Days
Nvidia launched the DSX POD reference design, claiming it can reduce AI data center deployment time from six months to two weeks to accelerate capital returns, though the announcement sparked on-site environmental protests.
At its GTC conference in Berlin on October 22, 2026, Nvidia unveiled the DSX POD, a prefabricated modular reference design. Built around the Vera Rubin AI infrastructure, the solution aims to cut AI data center deployment times from approximately six months to as little as 14 days using factory-integrated containerized modules.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the economic implications of this speed during his keynote. He noted that each gigawatt-scale data center costs about $50 billion to build, with expected annual revenues in the tens of billions. A delay of just three months could result in $10 billion in lost revenue, he said. By shifting more work into the supply chain, the DSX POD seeks to reduce idle computing capacity and unused capital expenditure, thereby improving profitability.
The design is backed by partners including Dell Technologies, HPE, Schneider Electric, and Vertiv. Charlie Boyle, Nvidia's Vice President of DGX Systems, stated that these units can be deployed inside existing industrial buildings or brownfield sites, such as abandoned warehouses, allowing for rapid capacity addition without new large-scale campuses. The system also uses dry coolers instead of traditional evaporative cooling to address water usage concerns.
However, the launch was met with significant social resistance. During Huang's speech, Greenpeace protesters interrupted the keynote, unfurling banners and questioning Nvidia about the use of its technology in Russian drones and the environmental impact of data center expansion. Benjamin Stephan, a Big Tech campaigner at Greenpeace International, later issued a statement criticizing Nvidia for building an 'unchecked AI empire' that causes damage to water supplies and soil, alongside rising electricity bills for communities worldwide.
