According to multiple media reports, Microsoft has withdrawn from a project in Loughton, Essex, that was originally considered the UK's largest AI supercomputer and data center. The initiative was driven by UK AI infrastructure startup Nscale, with an original target launch date of 2027 and Microsoft serving as the primary tenant to support its Azure cloud services.

When announced in September 2025, the site was designed to house 23,040 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs, starting with a 50 MW facility expandable to 90 MW. However, UK grid authorities had previously informed Nscale that the required power might not be available until the early-to-mid 2030s, creating significant uncertainty around the original timeline.

Following Microsoft's exit, Nscale has not yet publicly announced new customers but stated it remains committed to advancing the Loughton project while evaluating alternative power sources and other expansion sites within the UK. Nscale emphasized that its partnership with Microsoft on other projects remains solid, with ongoing collaborations in Norway, Portugal, and the United States.

This development highlights how power supply and grid interconnection have become universal bottlenecks for the deployment of large-scale AI infrastructure. As AI compute demand surges, physical energy constraints are increasingly impacting the investment and deployment pace of hyperscale cloud providers.
