Microsoft Claims GPT-5-Powered Diagnostic System Outperforms Doctors by 4x
Microsoft publishes Science study claiming its multi-agent Diagnostic Orchestrator achieved 83% accuracy in benchmarks vs 36% for humans, pending clinical validation.
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman told The Verge that the company’s “Diagnostic Orchestrator,” powered by OpenAI’s GPT-5, diagnosed conditions with up to four times greater accuracy than human doctors in controlled tests.
The findings, published in Science, rely on Microsoft’s self-created SDBench, utilizing cases from The New England Journal of Medicine and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The system uses multiple AI agents to mimic expert panel reasoning.
In NEJM cases, the AI achieved approximately 83% accuracy compared to roughly 36% for generalist physicians with references and 22% without. Microsoft acknowledges the technology requires clinical validation before wide deployment and plans to begin hospital testing soon.
