Meta GEM Model: How LLM Architecture Reshapes Ad Recommendation Scaling

Meta's engineering team published a blog detailing the latest advancements in its Generative Ads Model (GEM). The post explains how Kunlun architecture, LoopFM knowledge transfer, and Solaris precomputation address challenges in long-sequence modeling, cross-domain learning, and real-time inference latency, reporting significant improvements in conversion rates and click-through rates.

Meta's engineering team released a detailed technical breakdown of the latest generation of its Generative Ads Model (GEM) on October 13, 2026. The core value of this post lies in revealing how Large Language Model (LLM) scaling paradigms are adapted to industrial recommender systems (RecSys), specifically addressing unique constraints such as heterogeneous features, data dynamics, and real-time latency. For readers interested in AI infrastructure and ad tech, this serves as a rare case study of production-grade architecture.

The evolution of GEM marks a shift from isolated optimizations for individual domains like Facebook and Instagram toward a unified central foundation model. A key aspect of this transition is "bending the scaling curve." Traditional recommendation models struggle to improve performance linearly with parameter and data size like Transformers do, due to massive heterogeneous features and shifting distributions in user behavior sequences. To tackle this, Meta designed a new architecture called Kunlun, which achieves 2.5x model complexity growth through deep hardware co-design. They observed an LLM-like scaling law at their largest pre-training scale, indicating that more capacity and longer context directly translate into emergent gains in ranking quality and business results.

Regarding inference efficiency, the primary challenge for GEM is transferring the intelligence of the large foundation model to hundreds of vertical models serving ads in real time. Evaluating the large-scale model within a live ad request is prohibitively expensive and increases latency. Meta introduced LoopFM, a structured representation technique that compresses GEM's internal representations and sequential historical memory into compact data for downstream models to learn. Coupled with Solaris elastic precomputation, the system speculatively generates user-ad embeddings in background jobs just before they are needed, allowing vertical models to access near-real-time foundation model intelligence without being constrained by latency budgets.

Furthermore, GEM breaks down data silos through a unified compute engine that learns across surfaces and domains. Using a mixture-of-experts framework with shared and domain-specific experts, along with a cost-free data mixing strategy, the model transfers generalizable representations learned from data-rich click tasks to data-sparse conversion tasks. This unification enhances full-funnel optimization and enabled Meta to double end-to-end training efficiency to 20-25% Model FLOPS Utilization (MFU) while scaling total training FLOPs by 4x across thousands of GPUs.

While Meta reports an 18.9% conversion improvement and 12% CTR improvement, these figures are vendor-self-reported and lack independent verification or detailed baseline comparison disclosures. However, the technical details of Kunlun, LoopFM, and Solaris provide concrete engineering insights into achieving LLM-scale recommendations in resource-constrained production environments. These mechanisms illustrate how architectural innovation and asynchronous computation can balance model intelligence against service latency, offering valuable references for AI application deployment.
