The Linux kernel's Error Detection And Correction (EDAC) subsystem plans to remove four legacy hardware drivers—i82975x, x38, xgene, and i3200—in version 7.4. Borislav Petkov, an AMD engineer and EDAC maintainer, explained in a merge request that while these drivers correspond to hardware rarely used in production anymore, they have recently received a surge of bug reports and "fixes" generated by AI/LLMs.

Petkov noted that without real users to test these old code paths, the AI-generated patches create significant maintenance noise. To combat this "frenzy," maintainers decided to orphan and subsequently delete the drivers. This move highlights a new challenge for open-source communities facing the proliferation of automated code generation tools: technical debt is not always caused by functional defects, but sometimes by the administrative burden of managing low-quality automated contributions.
