Granola Launches Free Dictation Feature to Compete Directly with Wispr
Granola adds unlimited free dictation on Mac, challenging Wispr's core market; valuations stand at $1.5B and $2B respectively.
AI meeting notes startup Granola officially launched a dictation feature on the Mac platform on October 29, 2026. Users can press the "Fn" key to start speaking, and the tool automatically cleans up and formats the text for cross-app use, such as replying to emails or writing notes. The feature is currently free with unlimited words, and the company stated that iOS and Windows versions will follow soon.
This move marks the blurring of product boundaries in voice AI. Previously, Wispr, known for its dictation tools, had already entered the meeting notes space. According to TechCrunch, Granola is currently valued at $1.5 billion, while Wispr is valued at $2 billion. Granola focuses on meeting automation, whereas Wispr aims to build its own models through a research lab, exploring different human-computer interfaces.
This feature convergence is not an isolated case. Other voice startups like Fireflies, Speechify, and Monologue have also pivoted to multi-feature apps offering both meeting notes and dictation. While early strategies focused on doing one thing well, all players are now competing for the entry point of capturing user speech data, intensifying competition in the consumer and enterprise voice AI market.
