Germany's EV Market Share Hits Record 37%, But VW's €5.9 Billion Q3 Loss Highlights Transition Pain
Germany's October EV market share reached a record 37%, yet local automakers like Volkswagen face losses due to high costs and Chinese competition, showing sales growth isn't translating into profits.
According to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), new registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Germany reached 94,086 units in October 2026, a year-on-year increase of 79.5%. This pushed the BEV market share to a record high of 37%, marking the second consecutive month that electric cars outsold gasoline and diesel vehicles combined. However, this surge in demand has not improved the financial health of local automakers, who are struggling with profitability due to intense price wars and high transition costs.
The data shows that gasoline car registrations fell by 40.5% year-on-year in October, while diesel registrations dropped by 21.6%, leaving them with a combined market share of just 24.5%. In the first ten months of the year, cumulative BEV registrations hit 698,230 units, already surpassing the German Association of the Automotive Industry's previous full-year forecast of 693,000. This growth was partly driven by purchase subsidies retroactive to January 2026: buyers or lessees of new BEVs can receive €3,000, with low-income families eligible for up to €6,000. Consequently, private buyer registrations increased by 20.6%, while corporate registrations decreased by 8.2%.
Despite strong sales, German automakers face severe profit pressure. The Volkswagen Group reported an operating loss of €5.9 billion in the third quarter, attributed to impairments on its Porsche stake, weak sales in China, and low margins in its EV business. In response, VW has approved plans to cut 100,000 jobs and close several factories in Germany. Meanwhile, Chinese brands are rapidly gaining market share: BYD recorded 47,961 cumulative registrations in Germany this year, slightly ahead of Tesla's 47,742. Brands like Leapmotor and XPeng are also growing quickly. Although many of BYD's sales in Germany are plug-in hybrids, their overall presence is significantly strengthening.
