Gallup Report: US Worker Engagement Hits Lowest Level Since 2011, Remote and Hybrid Workers Hit Hardest by AI

Gallup data shows US worker engagement dropped to 29% in Q3 2026, the lowest in 15 years. Remote and hybrid employees in AI-integrated organizations experienced significantly larger declines than on-site staff, suggesting AI adoption is outpacing managerial support.

According to the latest quarterly survey by consulting firm Gallup, US worker engagement fell to 29% in the third quarter of 2026, marking the lowest level since 2011. This metric tracks employees' focus, motivation, and enthusiasm for their jobs.

The survey revealed that remote and hybrid workers were disproportionately affected. In organizations that have adopted AI tools, fully remote employees saw a five-point drop in engagement, while hybrid employees declined by two points. In contrast, on-site employees and those in roles that cannot be performed remotely saw only about a one-point decrease.

Gallup noted that although earlier research in 2026 indicated a potential thawing in employee attitudes toward AI, this trend has reversed. Workers in "AI-integrated organizations" now report similar overall engagement levels as those in non-AI organizations, but hybrid and remote groups continue to express lower happiness and participation.

The report suggests that physical distance may contribute to psychological distance between employees and their organizations. As companies navigate the use of AI at work, the pace of adoption appears to be outstripping the communication and managerial support needed to make it effective.
