Elvis Presley Estate Sues Anthropic for Over $41 Million in AI Training Data Dispute
Reports indicate the estate alleges unauthorized use of 270+ songs; Anthropic denies wrongdoing.
According to a report by German tech outlet t3n.de citing the New York Times, the estate of Elvis Presley has filed a lawsuit against AI company Anthropic in a California court. The suit alleges that Anthropic used more than 270 of Presley's songs to train its Claude models without permission.
The plaintiffs are seeking over $41 million in damages, calculated at $150,000 per song. Billboard magazine, also cited in the report, described this as the most significant legal action ever taken on behalf of a single musician.
Anthropic told the New York Times on October 25 that it disputes the allegations and intends to defend itself. The case highlights ongoing copyright tensions between music rights holders and generative AI developers.
