Broadcom CEO Hock Tan Compares AI Investors to Gamblers, Warns Capital May Be Next Bottleneck

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan at a Singapore event criticized speculative AI investing, warning that capital access may become the primary constraint on AI growth.

Per Bloomberg, Tan said many AI investors have "no clue what they are investing in," setting extreme expectations only to find themselves "in a casino." He questioned the long-term economics of money-losing AI labs such as OpenAI: despite reaching $50 billion in annualized revenue in September, heavy training costs mean profitability remains unproven. "It doesn't tell anything at this point except that there is a lot of potential revenue growth," he said.

Tan identified insufficient capital, not chip supply, as the next constraint on AI growth. He cited the withdrawal of Australian data center company Firmus Grid's planned $5.5 billion IPO last week as a sign that investors are growing skeptical of AI infrastructure valuations built on future revenue streams. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who joined the same panel, said hardware shortages will persist for two to three years, with memory chips likely the first segment to cool.

Broadcom itself is a core supplier of AI data center components, so Tan's warning is not contradictory to his commercial interests, but readers should treat it as a supply-chain insider's judgment on financing sustainability rather than independent market verification.

How it got here

What is still unsettled
