Blair Metcalf is the principal UX engineer at Reddit and the creator of Reddit Proto, an internal platform that allows designers and product managers to build production-like prototypes without interacting with GitHub. In the How I AI podcast, he argues that what makes AI a reliable builder is not the model itself, but the design system MCP.

Reddit Proto operates by handling repositories, branches, and scaffolding in the background of its desktop application, providing designers with a simple path from idea to production-grade prototype. However, the quality of the output is determined by the context Cursor receives: each annotation includes relevant components, design system guidelines, and user intent before being sent to the AI. According to Metcalf, this context transforms a brief annotation into an accurate working edit rather than a guess.

The design system MCP functions by mapping Reddit’s design tokens, components, and workflows directly to production code. This ensures Cursor knows which component to use, its visual appearance, and where the code should reside. Without this mapping, AI-generated prototypes would merely be HTML that looks correct; with it, the output can integrate directly with existing codebases.

Metcalf also highlights a frequently overlooked factor: real data determines prototype credibility more than model capability. Reddit Proto allows users to log in with their actual accounts, populating feeds, searches, and community content with familiar, real-world data. Leadership evaluates the genuine experience rather than mentally substituting placeholders with hypothetical content. This combination of real components and real data creates instant alignment, shifting review focus from implementation details to the experience itself; the greatest speed gain comes from eliminating the uncertainty that previously delayed decisions.
