Atlassian Head of AI Sherif Mansour: Three Core Tensions in Shipping AI Across 20 Products
In a SaaStr podcast episode, Atlassian's Head of AI Sherif Mansour shared his experience implementing AI across 20+ apps, including Rovo. He discussed three major tensions: chat vs. dedicated UI, reimagine vs. bolt on, and the '10X AI builder' myth, noting that the answer is rarely either/or.
Episode 881 of The Official SaaStr Podcast features Sherif Mansour, Head of AI at Atlassian. Having spent 17 years at Atlassian, Mansour currently oversees AI strategy across a portfolio of more than 20 applications, including Rovo, their AI platform used by over 5 million people monthly. In the episode, he shares the three biggest tensions his teams have wrestled with while building AI into some of the world's most widely used SaaS products.
The first tension is 'chat vs. dedicated UI.' Atlassian built chat into every app not as an end state, but as their best product discovery tool. Mansour compares it to the command line before Windows: chat is the universal interface, and the patterns customers typed revealed exactly what features to build next. The second tension is 'reimagine vs. bolt on.' Despite conventional wisdom against bolting AI onto existing workflows, Atlassian did exactly that and succeeded, establishing the principle that anything a human can do in the product, an agent should be able to do too. The third tension involves the '10X AI builder' myth. Atlassian experimented with making everyone an AI builder but found a lack of direction. They subsequently flipped their hiring pyramid, bringing in more juniors and seniors; data shows juniors are nearly twice as likely to experiment with AI tools as their senior counterparts.
