Anthropic's IPO Filing Highlights Multi-Chip Compute Strategy, Analysts Warn of Threat to Nvidia Pricing Power

Anthropic lists cross-platform compute pooling as a key advantage in its S-1 filing, with analysts suggesting this enhances bargaining power against Nvidia.

US-based AI startup Anthropic has explicitly cited its ability to manage "a single, fungible pool" of compute resources from multiple strategic partners as a core competitive advantage in its initial public offering (IPO) application. According to Business Insider, the S-1 filing released Monday reveals that Anthropic currently utilizes hardware from four distinct chip families: Amazon Trainium, Google TPUs, Nvidia GPUs, and AMD GPUs.

The company states that its software directs workloads to different chips based on productivity levels, noting that building this flexibility "took years and significant investment." This disclosure signals to investors a strategic intent to reduce dependence on any single supplier.

Patrick Moorhead, founder and CEO of Moor Insights & Strategy, pointed out that the real exposure lies in Nvidia's pricing power, stating, "A customer that can shift work across four platforms negotiates very differently than one that can't." Ashish Nadkarni, an analyst at IDC, added that the multichip approach also insulates Anthropic from fluctuations in Nvidia's chip supply.

However, breaking Nvidia's grip remains challenging. Moorhead emphasized that switching between chips is still difficult, particularly for training AI models rather than running inference, and only the largest AI companies possess the resources to do so. Furthermore, Anthropic continues to spend billions on Nvidia compute. Brad Gastwirth, global head of research and market intelligence at Circular Technology, argued that this does not represent a major near-term threat, as having more chip options does not erase Nvidia's advantages in performance, networking, and software.
