Amazon CEO Jassy Predicts 6 to 8 Mainstream AI Models Will Emerge; Bedrock Spend Up Nearly 7x
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy predicts 6-8 competitive AI models will emerge in 2-3 years, noting multi-model usage is becoming standard and revealing Bedrock spend by Fortune 500 firms rose nearly 7x YoY.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated during Thursday's Q3 2026 earnings call that he expects the frontier AI model race to result in 6 to 8 models that are roughly equal in quality, or at least good enough for over 95% of workloads, within the next two to three years. This view challenges the assumption of a single dominant 'winner-takes-all' model, suggesting instead that different models will excel in specific areas such as reasoning, coding, visual tasks, speed, or cost per token.
Jassy argued that most customers will use multiple models, often within the same generative AI application. This trend aligns with the strategy behind Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Bedrock platform, which provides access to over 100 foundation models from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta through a unified API, allowing developers to switch models without rebuilding their infrastructure.
To support this multi-model thesis, Amazon disclosed significant growth metrics for Bedrock: spending by Fortune 500 companies on the service increased nearly sevenfold year-over-year, and token volume grew almost 17 times. Jassy described Bedrock as the fastest-growing multibillion-dollar product in AWS history, hinting it could reach a scale comparable to EC2.
While acknowledging that switching models isn't free—due to differences in context limits, tool capabilities, and security requirements—Jassy emphasized that a neutral access layer monetizes the constant rotation between competing models. He noted that AWS does not share customer prompts with model providers, a key factor for enterprise adoption.
The prediction is underpinned by Amazon's proprietary hardware strategy, with most Bedrock traffic running on Amazon's Trainium chips to control costs and protect margins. As AWS revenue accelerates to a $184 billion annualized run rate, Bedrock's aggregation capability becomes a critical lever for Amazon's competitiveness in the AI sector.
