Amazon CEO Jassy Dismisses Threat from 'Not Great' AI Shopping Agents, Reveals 400 Million Alexa Users

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has dismissed concerns that AI-powered shopping agents, such as Meta's Muse, will undermine the company's core retail business. According to TechRadar, speaking after the release of record financial results, Jassy told analysts that barely any customers are using these agents because the experience is "still not great, nor more convenient than coming to a retailer directly." This comment follows Amazon's decision in September 2026 to block Meta's Muse assistant from accessing its online store, citing violations of customer terms of use.

While external AI agents have not yet disrupted Amazon's traffic, Jassy highlighted the growing traction of the company's own voice assistant. He revealed that more than 400 million customers have used Alexa for shopping in the past year, with "customer interactions" growing by 570% year-over-year. Additionally, US customers who use Alexa spend 50% more per order than those who do not, suggesting potential expansion of the service in the coming months.

Meta has already integrated Muse with major retailers including Walmart, Best Buy, and Shopify, but Amazon remains outside this ecosystem. The company continues to rely heavily on human shoppers visiting its website directly, where exposure to advertisements and suggested products drives its highest returns. Jassy's remarks reflect a defensive posture among large platforms: questioning the maturity of third-party agents while reinforcing the value of their proprietary data and user interfaces.
