Alexandr Wang, Who Helped Found Meta's Superintelligence Lab: Personal Agents Are in Many Ways the End Point of Consumer Products

Wang tells David Senra his core thesis: AGI will handle nearly everything we have to do, freeing us to spend all our time on what we want to do. Meta's product ecosystem happens to cover exactly the latter.

Early 2026, the AI industry's consensus was overwhelmingly tilted toward coding agents. Anthropic's Opus and Claude were far ahead in programming, and the entire industry was crowding into that use case. Alexandr Wang, who helped found Meta's Superintelligence Lab, formed the opposite conviction at that moment: personal agents were the direction Meta should bet on, and as far as consumer products went, in many ways they were the end point.

His reasoning starts from a simple classification. Everyone's life contains things they want to do and things they have to do. He believes AGI's promise is that AI will handle almost all the things we have to do, freeing us to spend all our time on the things we want to do. And Meta's products—Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook—happen to cover the domain of what people want to do.

This logic got its first real validation in February 2026. Nat Friedman—someone who helped create GitHub Copilot and was one of Stripe's earliest customers—became the first person within MSL to deeply use OpenClaw. Wang describes his experience as somewhere between terrifying and euphoric. Friedman trusted the agent entirely, even letting it watch security footage to confirm he was drinking water and then congratulate him.

But the OpenClaw phenomenon faded quickly. Wang acknowledges that the hype did not persist—people had occasional magical moments, but most of the time the product did not work well, problems piled up, and the excitement simply died down.

Wang emphasizes that Muse's development was not achieved by overwhelming model capability. Asked why his team could do what OpenClaw's developers could not, his answer is plain: the unglamorous part of what made Muse magical was just grinding out and sanding down every detail to make the combined model-plus-product experience truly good, iterating many times on the model itself.

This judgment has a clear boundary. Wang's argument rests on the premise that Meta has distribution to 3.5 billion daily users. For companies without that distribution, the same personal-agent logic does not automatically apply. He himself acknowledges that OpenClaw's fade showed the prior failure was not wrong direction but insufficient reliability—which is exactly what Muse spent seven months solving. If that problem had not been truly solved, the entire strategic premise would have been undermined.

Meta

How it got here

What is still unsettled
