Activists Storm Microsoft AI Data Center Site in Amsterdam as European Protests Escalate
About 100 protesters breached a Microsoft AI data center construction site in Amsterdam, marking the first of 85 planned actions across Europe by the 'Stop Dirty Data Centers' coalition.
According to Reuters, approximately 100 protesters stormed a Microsoft AI data center under construction in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on November 6, 2026. The demonstrators carried placards reading "Screw your data center," demanding an end to what they describe as environmentally harmful infrastructure projects.
The incident was part of a coordinated campaign by the "Stop Dirty Data Centers" coalition, which planned actions at 85 locations across 16 countries, including Ireland, Poland, and Denmark, over November 6 and 7. The group targets the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure by major technology companies.
The coalition stated it is not opposed to technological progress but seeks an immediate moratorium on new large-scale data centers in Europe until governments establish clearer regulations regarding their environmental and social impacts. Their concerns include rising energy bills, water shortages, climate change, and disruption to local communities.
Pure Data Centers, the owner of the Amsterdam facility, asked those on site to leave safely and engage in dialogue. Microsoft acknowledged the strong feelings of the public and respected the right to peaceful expression but stated it does not condone unlawful actions. This wave of protests highlights growing societal tension surrounding the energy and environmental footprint of the AI boom.
