According to CCTV News, the Yanta District People's Court in Xi'an recently concluded an "unjust enrichment" dispute. A gaming company mistakenly refunded 33,627.6 yuan more than agreed when returning top-up funds for a minor. Facing this unexpected windfall, the defendant Liu not only refused to return the excess amount but also submitted a call recording with the gaming company's lawyer during the trial, claiming the other party had agreed to waive her repayment obligation.
After multiple verifications and voice comparisons, the court confirmed that the recording did not match the actual voice of the plaintiff's lawyer. The defendant eventually admitted that the call recording was synthesized and forged using AI technology. The court ruled that the excess money constituted unjust enrichment and ordered its full return along with corresponding interest.
Judge Tong Jingjing from the Yanta District People's Court explained that keeping money due to another's operational error does not constitute a contractual relationship but rather unjust enrichment. Since the defendant admitted to forging the evidence in court and apologized, and the act did not cause severe legal consequences for the trial outcome, the court gave her criticism, education, and a stern oral admonition without imposing fines or detention.
