According to recent tests by US tech media WIRED and a response from a Meta spokesperson, Meta's AI agent Muse, launched last month, allows adult users to engage in explicit text conversations. In contrast, OpenAI's Dots and xAI's Grok Bot both refused similar requests during testing. Muse can connect to apps like Gmail and Outlook, as well as bank accounts, and has been downloaded by millions of users within about three weeks of launch.
A Meta spokesperson stated that Muse is an application for users aged 18 and older, does not block legal adult behavior, and stores conversations in a private, secure virtual machine accessible only to the user. The system prompt explicitly states that adults have autonomy over their sexuality and that adult sexual content is a legitimate form of expression.
Senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center criticized the move as a "powder keg," warning that if accounts are compromised, these private conversations could become leverage for extortion. The director of AI and privacy at the Consumer Federation of America accused Meta of prioritizing engagement over safety.
