Study: Google AI Summaries Boost Reddit Engagement by 12%, But Conversational Mode Erases Gains
A preprint finds that static Google AI Overviews increased Reddit engagement in safe-for-work communities by ~12%, but the introduction of interactive AI Mode largely eliminated these gains.

A recent study examining the impact of Google's AI search features on Reddit reveals that static AI summaries (AI Overviews) actually increased user engagement on the platform, rather than substituting for it. By comparing 'Safe-for-Work' (SFW) communities—which are indexed and surfaced in AI Overviews—against 'Not-Safe-for-Work' (NSFW) communities, which are excluded from summaries despite being indexed, researchers found that daily comments in SFW communities rose by 12.0% and the number of unique commenting users by 12.4%.
This finding challenges the prevailing concern that generative AI will sever traffic to content publishers. The study notes that the positive effects were concentrated in experience-based discussions (opinions, advice) rather than fact-based information. However, when Google subsequently introduced 'AI Mode,' which allows users to interact conversationally with the summary, these gains in experience-based content were largely eliminated. This suggests that the impact of AI search on the content ecosystem depends critically on interface design: static summaries with citations can funnel users back to sources, while closed-loop conversational interfaces may retain them.
