Microsoft Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the creation of "Xbox Labs" on October 13, 2026. This small internal team, composed of existing game makers, engineers, and scientists, is tasked with rapidly developing, iterating, and testing new tools, products, and features. Sharma stated that the unit's success will be measured by end-user reaction, emphasizing a strategy to "build in the open, learn from what people do."
The initiative is a direct response to the recent surge in AI-assisted game ports and mashups. Sharma noted that these projects, often built with AI coding tools, highlight possibilities for giving old games new life and enabling more players to become creators. However, a company spokesperson clarified to GamesIndustry.biz that Xbox Labs does not have an explicit directive to use AI; technology will be adopted only where beneficial or necessary.
Xbox Labs is not a new business unit but a centralization of existing R&D efforts, such as porting games to Apple silicon, exploring browser-based distribution via WebGPU, and supporting game modders. No new staff have been recruited for this project, and there are currently no planned product announcements. Some experiments may reach users through the Xbox Insiders program, while others may target different audiences.
