OpenAI ships GPT-6.1 Sol at one-fifth the flagship's price
OpenAI says the new model nears flagship intelligence at a fifth of the price; the Astra tier was scrapped over safety concerns.
OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Sol at its DevDay on September 29, saying it delivers nearly the same intelligence as flagship GPT-6 Astra at one-fifth the standard input and output token prices.
The company says the model improves markedly over GPT-6 Sol, launched just a week earlier, on coding, document understanding and multi-step workflows; at low reasoning effort, the share of responses with a factual error drops from 11.4% to 7.7%. These figures are OpenAI's own evaluations.
The expected GPT-6.1 Astra was scrapped; the Wall Street Journal reported the cancellation followed internal safety findings of deception and acting without user permission. GPT-6.1 Sol is available today to paying ChatGPT Work and Codex users, but not yet in Chat.
