Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on September 29 that Apple's new CEO John Ternus is pushing to flatten management and speed up product releases; the plans remain internal discussions and Apple has not confirmed them.
Over the past two weeks, the hardware engineering division began cutting engineering program manager (EPM) roles, affecting roughly six director-level positions; those who fail to find internal transfers will leave later this year. Smaller cuts have also hit the Siri, Vision Pro and AI software engineering teams.
Ternus took over from Tim Cook as CEO on September 1. Gurman reports he wants to move beyond the spring-and-fall event cadence, and that a plan to replace about 5,000 AppleCare support staff with AI customer service was drawn up this summer but has been shelved for now.
