AMD has announced an all-stock acquisition of World Labs, the world-model startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, for about $8.2 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval.
Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su and leading frontier AI research. In a blog post she wrote that without a focused hardware effort, AI is hobbled in efficiency. World Labs was founded in early 2024, has about 70 employees, and in early September unveiled Atlas, its first world model, which generates and simulates 3D scenes from a few images.
The price marks a sharp rise from the company's prior valuation: when it raised another $1 billion in early 2025, Bloomberg pegged the valuation at about $5 billion. AMD's aim is to use model expertise to close the gap with Nvidia, which has spent years building models and services on top of its chips. Note that the deal has not closed, and World Labs' products remain early-stage; The Decoder judges that AMD is largely paying for the team's expertise.
