UK's largest AI supercomputer faces grid delay, launch may slip to the 2030s
The UK's flagship AI supercomputer is delayed by grid power, showing electricity rather than chips is the binding constraint.

The Loughton AI supercomputer in the UK was due to launch in 2027, but grid power will not arrive until the early-to-mid 2030s.
Per The Guardian, UK Power Networks, which handles the grid connection, has told builder Nscale that sufficient power will not be available until then; Nscale says the project will proceed and is studying on-site generation. The site has applied for up to 90MW, roughly the consumption of 315,000 households.
The queue is the backdrop: regulator data showed 315 datacentres waiting for grid connections in June, with 73GW of combined demand against a national peak of just 45GW. Power access is becoming the hard constraint on compute buildout.
