Microsoft told The Pragmatic Engineer that Windows plans native support for AI agent identification, plus a registry of locally available MCP servers shipped with the OS.
Per the article, agents would get distinct identities through Entra ID and appear alongside human users in Task Manager; Defender is becoming "agent aware", scanning for local agent activity the way it scans for viruses. WindowsML, a new hardware abstraction layer, aims to run local models across GPU, NPU and CPU.
These are plans stated by Windows executives in a paywalled interview with no ship dates; which release actually carries them remains to be seen in Microsoft's official announcements.
