Google's $899 AI laptop opens for pre-order, ships next month
The Googlebook moves from announcement to purchasable; the real signal is the planned migration of roughly 50 million school Chromebooks toward Gemini.

Google opened pre-orders for the Googlebook on September 21 at $899, with US shelves on October 4 and Canada, the UK, Germany and three other markets a day later.
The device runs Android with a desktop Chrome browser, built around an AI cursor, a dictation feature called Rambler, and generatable widgets; purchases include 12 months of Google AI Pro. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo build the flagship models.
TechCrunch judges none of the AI features compelling enough alone to drive upgrades. The structural story is education: Google says schools hold around 50 million Chromebooks that will gradually become eligible to transition to the Googlebook experience, a distribution path for Gemini among students.
