Why can’t NVIDIA’s cash decline be assigned entirely to collections?
Prior-quarter liability support, prepayments and federal-payment timing provide competing explanations. Separate tax expense, payable and actual payments before assigning causes.
현재 판단
Receivables changed most but not alone. Other working capital worsened $12.489 billion through reduced liability support and larger prepayments; federal-payment timing changed too. Undisclosed tax amounts preclude either an all-customer or all-tax attribution.
Lower cash can mean collecting less—or paying more.
Operating cash fell from $50.344 billion to $24.077 billion, a $26.267 billion decline. The receivables impact worsened $20.103 billion, the largest individual drag; other working capital worsened $12.489 billion. Positive offsets reconcile the net decline, so the drags are not independent percentage allocations.
Payment counts are not payment amounts
도표 및 데이터 비교- 01FY2027 Q1
No estimated federal income-tax payments; other taxes not established
- 02FY2027 Q2
Two federal income-tax payments; their amounts undisclosed
An overlooked change is that liabilities provided considerable cash support in Q1 which did not recur in Q2. An accrued expense can affect earnings before payment; a later payment then affects cash. Quarterly variation can therefore reflect the company’s own payment schedule, not only customer credit.
The filing identifies two federal income-tax payments in Q2 and no estimated federal payments in Q1. Timing is disclosed; amounts are not. This weakens a customer-only explanation without turning the whole decline into taxes.
Disaggregate the $12.489 billion change.
Other working capital contributed $7.997 billion in Q1 and absorbed $4.492 billion in Q2, a deterioration of $12.489 billion. Prepayments and other assets worsened $4.514 billion; accrued and other current liabilities $7.511 billion; other long-term liabilities $0.464 billion. The three reconcile exactly.

The largest detail is accrued and other current liabilities: cash support dropped from $7.763 billion to $0.252 billion. This is a change in a cash-flow component, not evidence of one separate $7.511 billion payment. The unusually supportive preceding quarter is part of the sequential explanation.
The group also includes customer programs, deferred revenue, procurement-related items and payroll. Tax timing is compatible with the direction, but no disclosed allocation links the two payments to the whole amount. Calling the entire group taxes would invent a quantitative attribution.
Tax expense, payable and payment answer different questions.
Tax expense was $11.819 billion in Q2 versus $11.582 billion in Q1, an increase of $0.237 billion. These accrual-based earnings amounts are not actual cash taxes. Payment of earlier obligations and deferred-tax effects can separate expense and payment windows.
Three tax measures; only one is a payment
도표 및 데이터 비교| Measure | Verified Q1 / Q2 evidence | Actual tax payment? |
|---|---|---|
| Income-tax expense | $11.582bn / $11.819bn | No: accrual earnings measure |
| Current tax payable | $5.206bn at Q2 end | No: ending stock |
| Federal payments | Q1 no estimated payments / Q2 two payments | Timing established; amounts unknown |
Current taxes payable of $5.206 billion at July 26 are an ending obligation stock, not quarterly payments. New expense, payment, reclassification and other items can affect it. Noncurrent tax liabilities involving uncertain tax benefits, interest or penalties are not a substitute for quarterly federal payments.
A zero in the raw record has not been verified as actual tax paid; the issuer explicitly reports federal payments. Their amounts are undisclosed. Expense, payable balances and an unverified zero cannot supply the missing cash amount.
A tax-timing counterexample does not dismiss receivables.
Timing is a useful counterexample, not proof that receivables are harmless. The balance rose 54.9%, its change absorbed $22.346 billion and management connects some extended terms with first-half cash-growth offsets. Those facts remain alongside the payment-timing difference.
Year over year, cash grew 56.7% while cash/net income fell from 58.2% to 40.3%. Greater cash and weaker same-quarter conversion can coexist. The sequential drop warrants investigation but not a customer-crisis conclusion; annual growth does not replace credit checks.
The supported conclusion is that collection absorption increased, preceding-quarter liability support did not recur and federal-payment timing changed. Contract and tax allocation require corresponding detail. Reconciliation establishes accounting changes before evidence supports causal attribution.
Payment detail would change the explanation.
A rebound next quarter would not automatically prove that Q2 was merely a tax season. Receivables, prepayments, liabilities and quantified tax payments need examination, together with customer collections at maturity.
Actual cash taxes and liability detail are needed to quantify payment timing. The next movement in receivables, prepayments and liabilities will test whether this decomposition persists. The complete sequential bridge reconciles all components; customer credit requires separate maturity and recovery records.

Quarterly cash differs from future contractual responsibility. A separate agreement may make the equipment supplier a buyer of unsold capacity.

When could NVIDIA have to buy unsold AI-cloud capacity?
One type of agreement leaves unsold committed capacity for NVIDIA to purchase. Signing, triggering, execution and economic loss are separate states; aggregate commitments cannot collapse them.

In fiscal 2027 Q2, net income rose 2.3% from Q1 while operating cash fell 52.2%. A line-by-line reconciliation points to receivables, prepayments and payment timing. Extended terms for certain customers also complicate the idea that selling equipment means collecting cash first.
