Google announced on October 15 that it is updating its AI search results, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, to make inline links appear "higher up in responses more frequently." This move addresses growing concerns from users and publishers that AI-generated answers are reducing traditional web traffic.
According to the company's blog post, several new features are being tested: for queries related to specific tasks or information (such as airline refund policies), relevant high-value links will be highlighted at the top with context; previously announced "link carousels" are expanding to more regions and languages; end-of-query source links will include image thumbnails to improve click-through rates; and clickable creator profiles within AI Mode are also under testing.
Google also revealed that over 400 publishers are participating in its "News AI" pilot program, which pays publishers for licensing enhanced content used to develop new AI features. Partners such as Axios, CNN, and the Financial Times have recently joined the program.
