Shopify's new tool lets merchants build stores by chatting, no coding needed

Prise rapide
2026-10-02 00:44 GMT+8

Shopify released Canvas on October 1, letting merchants build an entire store by chatting with its AI assistant Sidekick, with changes visible in real time.

Shopify's previous no-code editor worked by rearranging modules and blocks within a chosen theme, and deeper customization still required editing code or hiring a developer. Canvas renders the store's actual theme code rather than a static preview, so merchants can test full interactivity and animation. Shopify simplified the theme architecture so Sidekick can read and write theme files directly.

Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and others already offer similar AI site builders; Canvas brings that approach to a leading e-commerce platform. The product is early days by Shopify's own account, and real-world results remain to be seen from merchant use.

On October 1 local time, OpenAI announced two new shopping features for ChatGPT worldwide: virtual try-on and a favorites function.

Users can upload a selfie or full-body photo to see how a clothing item or accessory looks on them, via a new "try on" button on shopping results; they can also upload a product image and have ChatGPT simulate the fit. The favorites feature saves items to an in-app library alongside try-on images.

The features run on the recently released ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which OpenAI says produces more natural images and follows editing instructions more reliably. Users can also describe a style and have ChatGPT assemble an outfit, or upload a celebrity photo to find purchasable lookalike items. The announcement gave no data on try-on accuracy or purchase conversion.

Suno opens its Speech feature in beta, generating voice and music in one track

AI music platform Suno has launched Speech, now in public beta across its web and mobile apps, generating spoken voiceovers from scripts or prompted descriptions.

The differentiator is that voice and background music are generated together as one cohesive track. Chief product officer Jack Brody called it the first audio model to combine voice and music in a single output. The music can be switched off with a toggle for clean speech.

Generation caps at about eight minutes, and an Advanced mode accepts custom scripts with controls for voice gender and style. The company concedes the feature is far from perfect — accents wander and pauses misfire — and says it will improve Speech from user feedback.

AI hardware design platform Flow Engineering announced on September 30 a $50 million Series B round, lifting its valuation to $750 million.

The round was co-led by Antonio Gracias, founder of Valor Equity Partners, and Gavin Baker of Atreides Management, with Sequoia Capital participating; Sequoia also led the company's Series A in October 2025.

Flow runs AI agents inside CAD, simulation and documentation tools to do impact analysis, flag conflicts and catch requirement failures. Its customers include Rivian, Volkswagen's joint venture RV Tech and Anduril. The claim that development cycles shrink from months to days is the company's own; the announcement carries no independent assessment.

Old AI writing tells are gone, but new verbal tics keep appearing

Vérifié 2026-10-02 02:15 GMT+8

Readers can now know that the famous old AI writing tells have been stamped out, but after comparing word frequencies Graphite found 13,000 phrases at least twice as common in AI text, and every model version grows new verbal tics of its own.

People previously relied on single features like em-dashes to flag AI text, but vendors have now largely eliminated those old tells, so such single-feature detection no longer works.

Graphite designed and ran the measurement itself: it used 10,000 pre-ChatGPT articles as a human control, had models rewrite them from summaries, and compared word frequencies. Claude Opus 5.5's biggest tell is "this matters," 116 times more frequent than in human writing; OpenAI's Astra favors "not simply X" corrective framing, over 100 times more common.

Graphite chief AI officer Greg Druck told TechCrunch that models only remove the best-known tells, new ones keep popping up, and every version has its own.

OpenAI has confirmed it parted ways with three members of its safety team for mishandling sensitive company information, in a story first reported by The Wall Street Journal and relayed by TechCrunch quoting a company spokesperson.

A company spokesperson said an internal investigation confirmed the three took sensitive information outside established procedures; the report did not name the researchers, the outside safety organization, or the information involved. Names circulating on X remain unconfirmed.

The departures came two days after The New York Times reported executives brushing aside safety warnings, and days after OpenAI scrapped the GPT-6.1 Astra launch over safety concerns. In 2024, the company fired two researchers over alleged leaks as well.

DigitalOcean bundles agent compute into a single monthly subscription

Prise rapide
2026-10-01 20:15 GMT+8

Per an October 1 diginomica report, cloud provider DigitalOcean launched Agent Droplets, a subscription bundling compute, storage, inference and tool access into one monthly price: $50 for a solo developer, $200 for a team.

The discounts are 15% and 20% respectively, covering DigitalOcean-hosted open models (such as Llama and Kimi) and the resources agents touch, with no agent-count or per-seat limits. A companion pre-paid balance starts at $5 and does not expire.

One limit matters: frontier models like Claude and GPT stay on pay-as-you-go list price and get no discount. The company says about 75% of Managed Agents workloads currently run on hosted open models, so most cost falls inside the discount.

CoreWeave adds cross-region writes and an archive tier to its AI object storage

CoreWeave announced in an official blog post dated September 16 that two new capabilities in its AI Object Storage are now available: cross-region write acceleration and a new Archive storage class.

Cross-region write acceleration lets a training job write to a bucket in a remote region at local latency, reducing the extra dataset copies teams keep near their GPUs. The Archive class holds data such as checkpoints that is expected to be read rarely, instead of deleting it.

The post also describes its LOTA local caching component, saying a leading frontier model provider runs it across more than 15,000 GPUs and 20 PB of cache, with p99 read latency on cache hits more than 8x lower than reading from the bucket. These figures are vendor-stated and not independently tested.

Investigation links student reliance on Google classroom AI to falling scores, still correlational

Sujet · 谷歌课堂AIMatériel

The New York Post relayed a Wall Street Journal investigation on October 1: students are becoming academically and emotionally dependent on Google's classroom AI tools, and students who used AI daily self-reported science scores 20 points lower than those who never used it.

An OECD survey of 760,000 fifteen-year-olds across 91 countries found reading scores at a 25-year low, with the US down 14 points from 2022; the report names AI ubiquity as one factor. Google says its education software reaches more than 170 million students and teachers worldwide, and its internal studies show the tools usefully supplement teachers.

The report also flags OpenAI's ChatGPT, but Google's reach is largest because AI comes preloaded on school Chromebooks. The figures are correlational and self-reported, not proof of causation.

On September 30, CoreWeave announced that the NVIDIA Vera CPU is coming soon to its cloud platform as standalone bare-metal capacity, with no launch date given.

Vera is an Arm-based CPU with 88 custom cores; the stated node configuration is two Vera CPUs, 1.5 TB of RAM, 15.36 TB of NVMe storage and a BlueField-4 DPU. CoreWeave says a single rack can hold 128 Vera CPUs and support more than 11,000 concurrent agent environments. The claim of over 3x faster sandbox startup is CoreWeave's own test, and the x86 CPU it was compared against is not named.

The CPU previously shipped only inside Vera Rubin NVL72 racks; this announcement makes it a standalone offering, and it is an announcement rather than a live service.

Microsoft announced on October 1 its first real-time streaming speech transcription model, MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, which outputs text continuously while speech is ongoing, covering 60 languages with automatic language detection.

The model is in a promotional pricing phase at $0.54 per hour, about $9 per 1,000 minutes; the earlier non-streaming MAI-Transcribe-2 was priced at $0.10 per hour in Azure Speech public preview. Developers can access it through Microsoft Foundry, MAI Playground and OpenRouter.

Per Microsoft's announcement, Artificial Analysis's September 28 streaming transcription leaderboard measured the model at a 2.50% final word error rate and 0.13-second final latency, both first among 28 models, ahead of Grok Voice Transcribe 2.0 Streaming at 2.73%. Voice applications can now start understanding or calling tools before a speaker finishes a sentence; real-world production performance remains to be verified.

Lambda borrows another $1 billion as GPU debt wins investment-grade ratings

2026-10-02 07:08 GMT+8

Lambda announced on October 1 the closing of a $1.008 billion investment-grade senior secured delayed draw term loan at a 6.78% fixed rate, its second institutional credit facility.

The facility was oversubscribed and received a Baa1 rating from Moody's and an A (low) rating from Morningstar DBRS, and was marketed to insurance companies and fixed-income investors. Proceeds fund GPU infrastructure for three committed customer deployments, with repayment secured by contracted cash flows from two investment-grade offtakers; the loan matures May 30, 2033 and fully amortizes.

The delayed-draw structure releases capital only as clusters enter service, rather than upfront. It is Lambda's third new credit market in roughly 18 months, following a broadly syndicated loan that closed on August 27, 2026. The ratings attach to this secured facility, not to Lambda as a company, and details of the three customer deployments are not public.
