AI Engineer: Exa founder Will Bryk on agentic web search
On September 16, 2026, the AI Engineer channel published a video featuring Exa founder Will Bryk discussing search engine design for the Agentic Web. He posits that 2026 marks the crossover year when machine-initiated searches first exceed human-initiated ones, and outlines Exa's shift from consumer search to an API-first architecture, emphasizing that models must rely on external retrieval to bridge the gap between their scale and the internet's.

The AI Engineer channel released a video interview with Exa founder Will Bryk on September 16, 2026. In the episode, Bryk articulates the logic behind search engine design in the era of the Agentic Web, noting that traditional recommendation-optimized mechanisms are ill-suited as AI agents become primary information consumers.
According to the episode description, Bryk presents a key temporal assertion: 2026 is the crossover year when the volume of search requests initiated by machines first exceeds those initiated by humans, with the gap expected to widen to a thousandfold thereafter. This premise underpins Exa's product transformation.
The interview traces Exa's development path. The company was founded in 2021 under a different name and launched a consumer search engine in 2022. Subsequent frequent user inquiries regarding programmatic access led the team to recognize a misalignment between their original product form and market demand, prompting a pivot toward building an API-first architecture tailored for AI agents.
Bryk uses a thought experiment in the episode to explain retrieval costs: performing perfect matching across a trillion documents for a single complex query would theoretically cost approximately ten million dollars per query; Exa's technical evolution aims to reduce this figure by nine to twelve orders of magnitude. Additionally, he distinguishes between simple human queries and complex agent queries, arguing that the latter require precise answers rather than recommendations.
