Meta open-sourced Rebalancer on September 21, a C++ library with a Python interface for solving assignment problems.
Used internally at Meta for over nine years, the tool handles NP-hard challenges like rack placement, service deployment, task scheduling, and traffic routing. It separates problem specification from solution algorithms, supporting both local search and mixed integer programming (MIP).
According to Meta's engineering blog, Rebalancer solves approximately 40 million assignment problems daily across Meta's infrastructure. The project is licensed under Apache 2.0 and installable via pip, though currently marked as Alpha on PyPI.
